I had to take Dot to the vet this morning because she's becoming incontinent. No biggie, I thought. They'll just rule out a UTI or bladder infection and prescribe some Proin.
However, I walked away with rule-out diagnoses of kidney failure, early doggie dementia, or Cushings. PLUS she's losing sight in her left eye and has macular degeneration.
She's almost 13, so it's not like health problems are totally unexpected, but STILL.
Aw sweetie. That's so hard. Doggie D is the first dog I've had as an adult, and he's only 6, so I haven't had to go there yet. He has scared us a couple times with bumps and lumps though. It sucks. Hugs to you and ear scratches for her.
Don't fret! Did they put her on a low-protein diet?
My monster was diagnosed with kidney failure last year, and she still acts like a heathen. She's 15, and the doctor acted like it was normal (along with her clumsiness, general weird behavior, eye problems).

My cat has kidney failure too. Hers is, so far, pretty controlled by diet. We spend an assload on food (um, $45 a case and that lasts us about 2 weeks) and she is happier. I am dreading the day we have to put her down or she passes.
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. But rest assured that if it is the kidneys, that can be controlled and pets can still live and be healthy for years. We thought at one time my 12 y/o kitty had kidney failure and the vet recommended a fish based diet along with wet food to make sure he got enough water. A year later he has no signs of kidney problems. So if it does turn out to be his kidneys, there are things you can do to keep him healthy for as long as possible.

aweilba - not yet. She's hoping that it's a diet problem, so we're going to try a week or two of diet change and see if that improves things. If it does NOT, she's going to order bloodwork to compare to her previous healthy self and hopefully rule out/in something.
My thoughts & prayers are with you because I know what you are going through and it's so hard to see our four legged children get old. I do hope medication can help her.
We put Gilbert down this weekend. His hips and hind legs gave out and he couldn't get up, walk or hold himself up to do anything (pee/poop). We carried him around and used a harness for 2 weeks before saying we can't continue to do this (he was ~13 years old and 65lbs). It was the hardest decision we ever had to make because from the waist up, he was fine. We are absolutely devastated.

Oh finally...I am so sorry for your loss. (((HUGS)))
I know how much you love Gilbert and what a difficult decision that was to make. He was a very lucky boy to have been a part of your family, and to live on forever in your hearts.

Oh finally I'm so very sorry. Lots of T&P to both you and mrs.jacinthe.
Sorry I kind of ended up hijacking your post with my sad news Hubby won't talk about our losing Gilbert so I find myself talking about it every other place.
