My husband just caused my heart to skip a beat....he usually does cause he's cute and all. But he sent the magical text that read, "Would you join me for a siding estimate date on Saturday." SWOON! We have known we would need to replace the siding since we bought the house almost 5 years ago. We're now in a better financial position to do it and we found a good company. Also, we NEED to replace it for non-cosmetic reasons as well.
We currently have some uh...not so glamorous brown siding. Words can't express how much I "love" it.
I. Color: We have a few ideas on what we want the color to be and shudders. We've even looked at some materials years ago. If this was your house, what would you choose? (Color or Material). I'm really interested in input because we can sometimes be challenged when it comes to design
II. Words of wisdom/Tips/Horror Stories from those who have done this with their home? Anything welcome.
What about a medium brown instead of dark brown? I honestly don't think it looks bad at all as-is. My suggestion would be to add some color with hanging baskets and bedding flowers.
Well, up close....it is not good. When you stand in the yard, you can see there are places of "wear and tear." It's wood siding and the years haven't been good to it. We were also told it would need to be replaced because it is damaged and getting worse. As awful as this sounds.....I think the phrase "rotting in places" was used when we had it checked out. If it wasn't damaged, we wouldn't spend the money there at all. We'd just deal with it.
You know we have done hanging baskets in the past. I'll have to mention that again to DH. We had purple flowers once and that was really nice.I'd be interested in doing those again.
I would also go with a lighter color brown / tan. I would then put dark brown shutters and paint the front door something fun. Maybe pull the peach out of the bricks and do a deep peach / orange for the door.
I can see that area sided in the cedar shake looking siding. There is a home in our neighborhood that just redid their siding and it is very striking. They kept the same vertical look to the siding around the windows and then above the windows there is a wide strip going from eave to eave. Above that is the shake looking siding. It is very clean looking. I will see if I can find a similar pic online...
Do you have any "trouble spots" that might make one color work better than another?
For example, my house has a north facing side that never seems to dry out well. It always gets green mossy crap growing on the siding. You can kind of see it in the shade/shadow:
When we replace, I want to go with a greenish gray that helps hide that a little, since I don't think we can really prevent it. All our neighbors get it on the same side. I could love yellow houses from here to the sun but I'd never put yellow on mine because of the moss.
You know we did look at Cedar Shake at one point years ago when we were first told we needed to redo the siding. I'll have to check with J and see if that's an option.
I also like the idea of doing something lighter and making the shutters dark. Cream, Light (barely color) yellow or something too.
Thank you all for providing the pictures as well!
Charky - It's an old pic. Yes, that tree will be hiding some of it!!! It does have super pretty purple flowers that are gorgeous when it is in full bloom. Maybe if all goes well on our quote, I can send pics showing the new siding and the pretty flowers!

We had our house re-sided a few years ago. We played it sage with a beige clay color, but I kinda wish we would have gone gray or green. I would test some of those options out before thinking beige or tan may be your only option because of the brown brick. I also would think about painting the shutters black. You could also paint the brick. I love painted brick.

I've thought about green too as an option. LIGHT green.
We were told by a realtor years ago not to consider blue....not sure I remember why.
I'm thinking I'm leaning towards a light cream/beige color and doing the shutters in a dark color or doing a light green and keeping the shutters light.
Sounds like you've figured it out. I would just pull a light color from the brick and go from there. For shutters, I agree to do darker. Garage doors, same as trim color. Then front door - that's where you should have some fun! Where is the front door anyway?
I THINK so. I was reviewing ideas with DH last night. He got really excited about the light green verses the tan/cream/beige tone. I think we're going to be looking up some additional pictures to decide between the two.
The front door is located almost behind that large middle bush. It's not really located there. You can see if when you are directly in front of the house. I think the angle of that picture hides it. It's to the left of the light and walkway.
Yet another reason why we are looking to get rid of the wood siding. We have "guests."
If we didn't have issues that were progressively getting worse thanks to it being wood siding, DH and I would have looked at painting it. But, we have to look at moving to vinyl.
