It's the small things

Until this week, I never realized how much I enjoyed birthday cards. Every year since I can remember my aunt and uncle would send me a birthday card with $5 in it. When my aunt died, my uncle took over. He died in May. On Tue. Allie got a card in the mail. I opened up the mailbox and got really happy about my card. When I realized it was Allie's I sobbed. I will never get a card for them again.

That caused a chain reaction. It dawned on me, that I won't be getting my wake up call from my other aunt on Monday. She died in Dec. Her birthday is the day after mine. We call each other every year and sing Veggie Tales to each other. Our inside joke.

It took me missing the one small thing, to realize how great life can be. I am heading to Target in a little bit. I am going to pick up a Veggie Tales DVD and give it to the first random kid. I am going to pick up a $5 gift card to Starbucks and give it to the first person I run across.

Damn it, now I am crying.

I can't stop crying long enough to get out. I might buy the stuff and give out on Monday.

I did it! I gave the starbucks card away. The woman cried with me. She just lost her dad. She was getting a coffee as I left.

The DVD was not a hit. I tried 3 families. I think I will try again on Monday. One lady told me it was strange to approach people to give things away. It made me laugh.

I'm sorry you're so sad. It's totally understandable. And I think it's awesome that you wanted to make someone else happy with your gifts. I'm glad you could make that lady's day.

Oh my day is far from crappy! I have been very productive. I am enjoying the day. I just felt sad this morning before heading to Target. My aunts and uncle were a huge reminder of how great I really have it. I took the hour or so this morning to cry and moved on.

You are amazing! I love that you took your sadness and used it as an inspiration to make somebody elses day. And who turns down free Veggie Tales? That stuff is classic!
