I believe Mrs.Mew said a while back that you can just jump right in a taxi at the hospital with a newborn in your arms.
Seriously!?
Our car seat (Chicco Keyfit) had handles that you could strap the seat belt over the babies lap, I am guessing that it is for situations like that. I did it twice when I had to run down the street with a friend.
True story re: no car seats in cabs in NYC. When we toured one of the Manhattan hospitals we were told we could just hail a cab and peace out with our baby, no carseat needed. The told us it's not required by law in the city. I assume that extends to all five boroughs, but I haven't verified it.
In NJ they do require you to have a carseat so we strapped that bad boy into a cab when we brought Ellie home from the hospital.
I haven't taken her in a cab in the city yet. I rarely take cabs anyway, it's mostly subway/walking. It's just easier! (And cheaper!)
Whaaaaaaaaat? No car seat required?? Oh, no. I just couldn't do it! I still have my almost 16 month old rear facing!
Yeah, I don't know if I could actually do it either. We use her car seat on her stroller with an attachment for now, and know how to install it in a car without the base, so if the situation ever arises where we need to take a cab, we can still strap her in real quick. But I mean, I fear for my own life while riding in a cab most of the time, I can't imagine just holding my baby on my lap! Especially my newborn on the way home from the hospital!

I can't imagine. I'm with Jen on this, I couldn't do it - Kennedy is still rear facing and will be for awhile. I have used the infant seat with out the base, when we flew. But I can't imagine no car seat!
