My 16 yo brother was just diagnosed with diabetes Friday. He didn't know what type or have any information about his treatment plan yet, but his dr did say diabetes could be the source of his GI problems. He's been having stomach pain/diarrhea for probably 2 years. He was diagnosed with IBS last year after a colonoscopy.
Has anyone heard of a link between diabetes & IBS/IBD? I'll admit I haven't researched it, but he's been seeing doctors in smallish towns in Montana, so I'm a little...skeptical. Or maybe it's just because I'm worried. Either way, it sucks.
Even worse, I don't know if he'll get the support he needs from my mom. My parents divorced almost 10 years ago (side note: that makes me feel old! I was just a teenager!) & he's lived with my mom ever since. She's been super lax with him. After his IBS diagnosis, she didn't make any changes to their diets (and she needs to eat better as well)... I really hope this prompts them both to try harder, but it worries me.
I'm interested in seeing responses as I don't know anything for sure. Recent routine bloodwork just showed that I am on the very high end of normal blood sugar, which my doctor found odd since I am thin, have a healthy lifestyle and don't have high cholesterol. My dad is diabetic (type 2), so it could just be crappy genetic luck, but I can't help wondering if my ulcerative colitis is behind the fact that my body doesn't seem to be processing sugars the way other people's bodies do. I go back for another round of blood tests in about 6 weeks to see if any of the diet modifications I've made recently matter or if it's really just my system going nuts no matter what.
