I'm not a huge fan of "accent walls" though I will confess to having a similar taupey sage walls in my LR. Mine mantle and surround are traditional and have more trim than either you posted but it's a very similar look. I pained the bump out white- which I guess is an accent in this case.
Not to be snarky, but I would hesitate to bring more attention to the fact that you have a black television hung over the mantle by adding more interest to the area. I know sometimes the TV in the most "pride of place" art spot in a home is unavoidable, but I wouldn't want to highlight it. I think your inspiration works because the white animal head pops against the white lattice work print.
I think what I'm struggling with is that I'm dying to do wallpaper somewhere in my house but I don't want to commit to an entire room. So I'm trying to find a smaller spot where I can use it.
I have Ikat patterned curtains in my dining room so that's out.
I just ordered a roll of wallpaper from Spoonflower to put in the back of some areas of built in shelving in our living room. I recently painted all the shelving white and we have cream tile around the fireplace, so I decided we needed some interest in the area. Spoonflower has tons of designs. I ordered 3 samples and they were nice quality, then I decided on the one I wanted. The designers can also make tweaks to the designs if needed (I had them make the design smaller so more of the design would appear in the small space).
This wallpaper is supposed to be removable. The directions say you just peel it off when you are done. But, it kind of looks like a pain to apply, so I actually plan to use command poster strips to hang it. In my space, it won't matter if it's not totally flush against the wall.
Personally, I hated the wallpaper of the 90s and wouldn't have thought I would ever want it. But I like it now in small doses because there are so many fun designs, and it's easy to remove when you are over it. no taking out chunks of the wall and having to repaint. As an accent, I like it much better than painting one wall a different color.
I don't think it would look bad behind your TV. I think it's hard to decorate a mantle when you have a TV above it, so the wallpaper would be a way to decorate without setting things on the mantle and blocking the TV. Alternatively, you could do the two side walls and leave the part behind the TV as it is.

Do you have a small closet, pantry or powder room you could do? Back when people were really into wallpaper I did my walk-in closet for practice. I'm thinking of doing my hall linen closet because no one in my family seems capable for closing the door to it.
I love spoonflower fabrics I didn't know they had wallpaper too. Ill have to check it out - thanks!!
I wish I had some shelves to wallpaper behind
Yes - when you are looking at any design, I think the default is to show you fabric, but just click the link below the picture for wallpaper or decals. I think most everything is available in fabric and wallpaper.
auntie - I'm thinking about our powder room but we have kind of ornate molding so I'm not sure if we can exacto knife around it good enough or not. Ill think about it because H picked some out.
