We are closing on our new construction loan Tuesday and will start building 1 week after that. Along with that is about $20k in out of pocket expenses that we've planned for and have cash for. Things like appliances, window coverings, radon mitigator, mirrors for bathrooms, etc.
For the last week, my 7 year old computer has started dying a slow death, my 11 year old car is having transmission problems, and I think we need to replace our 10 year old mattress.
I had planned on buying a new car in December, but may have to move it up. I can put off the mattress and deal with back pain, but I need a computer at home.
I like to have a desktop and I was going to try to buy just the tower since my monitor, keyboard, and speakers are still fine. I have no idea where to go or what to get yet. I haven't started researching yet. I may end up with a laptop, who knows?

Yeah, Murphy seems to have decided this is my year so I empathize.
Also I got a very nice new mattress on sale in Dec. Check around for sales (friends and family, memorial day). Computers have gotten very in expensive. If you really want to save you could probably open up your tower and rebuild it. As to the car, I love my Fusion which I got to replace my old car (11 years old when I blew the transmission on the freeway during rush hour). Fords have gotten very nice and are inexpensive for the features they provide.

My H got a refurbished HP tower from newegg for around $400. He's a huge computer nerd so the tower was pretty souped up with whatever crap computer nerds like.
Our coffee maker and toaster both died yesterday. They're on different breakers so I don't know what's up with that. No where near the small scale as a car but I'm pretty bummed because I love that coffee maker, it kicked ass.

I'm considering the CRV, Mazda CX-5, or Toyota Rav4. I looked at the CRV at the dealership today (there for an oil change) and they were nice. I need to talk to my loan officer to make sure this one-time close construction loan won't re-look at my credit when it changes to a permanent 30 year fixed at the end of construction. Otherwise, I may need to wait until the house is done in September to get a new car.
Thanks for the tip on refurbished computers, I hadn't thought of that.
