What is the most inexpensive 'department store' make up briand but still good quality?
I don't wear foundation now, only moisturizer and powder but as I get older, I think I need foundation to even things out. I want to go have someone work with me. I have somewhat sensitive skin if that matters.
Most of my blush, eye shadow etc is all covergirl or drug store brand so I am cringing at spending more than $8 on stuff but I realize I have to.
But really, there's nothing magical about the fact that a brand is sold at a department store rather than at a drugstore. Some drugstore products are fantastic, and some department store products are crap. Even across a brand the quality may differ (some brands may be great for one product but meh for another).
I'd probably pick your battles. For example, there are a lot of great drugstore mascaras out there (and mascara goes bad quickly and needs to be replaced often) so that may be an area to save on, while foundation may be worth a splurge (but which foundation is perfect for you is going to depend on a lot of factors).
I guess I'm also looking more for the teaching aspect. My mom has never worn make up. I've never been taught how to apply make up. I just kind of wing it. I know I can look so much better which is why I was thinking of going the department store counter route.

Do you have a sephora near you? I think they are better at helping you pick out products than department store counters.
If you're not used to wearing a lot of make-up then I would focus on finding a nice foundation that fits your needs and matches your skin. They are going to ask you your skin type (oily, dry, combination, etc.), what kind of coverage you're looking for and whether you prefer liquid or powder. In addition to actual make-up, you may want to talk to them about what to use when actually applying the make-up. Brushes and sponges can make a huge difference. As for application techniques, you can also find some tutorials online: makeupbytiffanyd.blogspot.com/
