Shows: I just finished X-Files. I'm watching Mad Men right now and we love it. Eating with Cannibals (Nat Geo special) Weeds The Twilight Zone Twin Peaks - I like weird shows but this was really weird House of Cards
Movies: Tiny Furniture - has Lena Dunham in it A Little Help - Jenna Fischer from the Office plays a single mom. It's very good! Margin Call - Kevin Spacey
The Well-Digger's Daughter. It is a sweet story of how a family retains their pride when a unwed daughter gets pregnant by a well-off soldier during WWI.
The Battlestar Galactica reboot is stunning. It's about politics and religion and everything that makes us people. Plus, it's fun.
The NEW episodes of Doctor Who are brilliant and fun and totally worth watching (you'll see them dated 2005+). They're some great TV. Don't let anybody convince you that you need to watch the old stuff. You don't. They're weird and funny and totally brilliant edge-of-your-seat TV. They're impossible to describe.
The spin off series from Doctor Who, Torchwood, is also brilliant. You really don't need to have seen DW to watch it, but it helps. It tells the tale of a group of paranormal cops in Cardiff, Wales. I guess it's kind of a modernized, sexier, X-Files. But not. Because they don't need to "believe", as they have aliens in their basement.
Speaking of which, I'm rewatching The X-Files right now. It gets off to a rocky start, but it's pretty freaking good once you get into it. The clothes are a little dated, as is the lack of good cell coverage, but it's fun to watch, whether you've seen it before or not. Plus, I still think David Duchovny is worth watching, even if he's just walking back and forth across the screen not doing anything. See, I'm a geek!
I think I love you. Also, we need to watch TV together.

Ditto Call the Midwife (I want Chummy to be my friend too!), Torchwood, and Sherlock.
Call the Midwife Season 2 is even better than the first. I have seen the whole thing and it just blew me away.
The Killing is really good. Young girl is murdered, it follows the fallout, from the family, the detectives on the case, everything. Very good.
The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Hill folk on drugs, in prison, clog dancing when filled with the holy spirit. It has it all. You will not regret it.
I started Bomb Girls the other day and I like it. Not love it but definitely like it.
The accident at the beginning of the series, omg. I agree it wasn't the greatest, but I liked it. Call the Midwife was better, but Land Girls was worse.

I am way up on this kind of stuff and had never heard of Bomb Girls or Land Girls. Thanks ladies!!!
OH!! And not a Netflix rec. but if you have Amazon, Lark Rise to Candleford is fantastic. It has Lydia from Pride and Prejudice (nowhere near as annoying as she was in P&P), Brendan Coyle (Bates from Downton) and Doctor Who fans will recognize a few bit players, such as Jackie Tyler from DW and Owen from Torchwood. Really good, set in a late 1800's British post office. SO good.
I like Land Girls. Call the Midwife is really good! So if I liked both of those, should I watch Bomb Girls?
Yes.
I liked Land Girls better than Bomb Girls but they are very similar story line wise in that there's a rich girl, a bitter girl, a sheltered girl, and the grown woman to tells them all what to do while being a hot mess of her own.

As much as I loved Lark Rise at the start, I stalled out in Season Three. I keep trying to go back but it seemed to have lost its touch around there. Everyone becomes rather one dimensional. But despite all that, I thought season one and two totally worth it.
I watched Persuasion the other night. It's the only Austen I'd never seen nor read before and it instantly became my favorite story. I'm reading the book now when I'm not reading Game of Thrones.

Have you watched the show Bramwell on Netflix? That is how I felt about the final season of that. It was like pod people had taken over. I actually rather liked season 3 of LRTC but season 4 seemed kind of rushed to wrap it up even though they didn't know yet that they weren't renewed!
You should all watch Bramwell by the way. 1895 female doctor, working in the slums of London. The very beginning is kind of disturbing (she is in a lecture where they are about to do a complete hysterectomy on a young woman as a "treatment" for PPD) but it gets much better after that.
I think I was okay for the beginning of season three. But by the end, I'd kind of had it. Laura just seemed to stop maturing when she had been for so long. Thomas and Margaret were getting no where and I'd lost my patience with Dorcas. I'm not really sure how to explain it. No one was progressing, maybe that's what I mean to say.
I've not tried Bramwell but I think I will, maybe tonight.
Since we're talking Amazon Prime, you should try London Hospital (which is actually called something else in the rest of the world.) It's basically E.R. set in London's East End in the Edwardian Era. It's very good and an amazing look into medicine at the time. I warn you now that the business of xrays will break your heart and turn your stomach.
There is also a new version of Upstairs Downstairs set in the 30's. It's very short and season two isn't up yet but I liked it a ton.
Only slightly related to upstairs downstairs, but has anyone seen W/E? It's not the best movie and yet I love it so much. I think it's the settings and the costuming. It's a very gorgeous pieces. I might be in love with Andrea Riseborough who is also in a movie called The Devil's Mistress (also called The Devil's Whore depending on where you're looking.) If you like it, TDM I mean, then you should try The Princess of Montpensier. It's in French but I love French movies. I can't help it. One of my boyfriends is in it, Gaspard Ulliel, aka young Lecter in Hannibal Rising. That man is so pretty.

I think I enjoyed it because I stopped really caring about Laura, and more about other characters, like the Misses Pratt, Minnie and Alfie, Emma, Thomas/Margaret, etc. I loved Queenie, HATED--and I mean couldn't stand to watch him--Twister. That actor is on Call the Midwife this season too, it took me a minute to figure it out. I did try London Hospital a bit ago but got a bit grossed out in the first episode. I have been meaning to go back. Thanks for mentioning Upstairs/Downstairs! I didn't know the new one was on Amazon! And season 2 is up there according to my mom's Prime account. I caught the first episode on PBS and never caught it again.
The dude who played Twister was in the first season of Rome back in the day and he pissed me off then. I adored Queenie. I do want to go back and find out what happened with the Misses Pratt. I love the younger one. She played Mariah in Mansfield Park and she was in Persuasion just the other day. I will probably go back and finish eventually. Does Squire whatshisface ever come back? I saw up to his wife's return. She's a pretty girl though her eyes are a week empty.
Have you see the Forsyth Saga? I don't think it was the best either but I enjoyed watching it. I adore Freddie and the squire from Candleford plays her husband. Freddie was in Persuasion too, the actress who plays her I mean and yes, Freddie is a girl.
I will have to watch season two of USDS because I need to know what happens with whatshisface's sister, that idiot. But I hear his mother doesn't come back and I'm always sad to lose a cantankerous old broad type. It would be like losing the dowager countess. How am I supposed to watch without an old lady to say all the snarky things I cannot?

I am pretty sure he comes back for an episode but I cannot remember exactly (I watched it all in about a week). There is a really great scene between Ruby Pratt (the younger) and Queenie I think in season 3, where Queenie teaches Ruby to make lace. It is so sweet and touching. She had a tiny part in Pride and Prejudice too! She has such a distinctive look, I really like her. Twister is just such a giant douche and Queenie deserved better.
I have not seen the Forsyth Saga but I have been told I must! I just added it to Netflix. I am so thankful to whomever started this thread because I really needed some new stuff to watch.
If you are into listening to podcasts at all, I highly recommend Up Yours, Downstairs. Husband and wife do recaps of Downton, and it is hilarious. They also do other Edwardian stuff, like in the last hiatus they did James Cameron's Titanic and Julian Fellowes' Titanic, and Gosford Park. They are covering Mr. Selfridge right now and I am pretty certain they plan on doing the Forsyth Saga when this is over. Definitely worth a listen.
Julian Fellowes' Titanic was such a watchable hot mess. I love, love, love whenever I get to see Maria Kennedy Doyle, even when she was furthering that insipid storyline with Bates. There's something about her that I adore.
I haven't watched Downton since season 2. I think it's a badly written series. I know that makes me a killjoy but it's not even deliciously bad like a lot of others I watch.

I could watch Gosford every.single.week.
Do Margaret and Thomas get a kid eventually?
Yep, she finds out she is pregnant in the final episode. And Dawn French comes back, and Alfie and Minnie get engaged (though, by the time you stopped they probably weren't together at all yet).
They never explain what happened when Ruby went to to Pontefract...she goes there, returns, and never say another word about it. That really bugged me.
Thanks, all, I've added to my NF queue. Ditto to many things in this thread, but trying to add shows that haven't been mentioned:
Parenthood. I got sucked in for the Asperger's plot line, which was written by someone whose son actually has it, but I learned to love the whole thing. Dax Shepard is my favorite. The first season was good, but it gets even better when they settle into their roles. Though, to be fair, a couple of the characters are annoying.
Doc Marten. How did you fans of British shows not mention this? I'm sad I've watched it all. Quirky small English seaside town. Martin Clunes is delightfully dry as the doctor who deals with all the crazy. Wait, I just remembered I haven't watched the prequels! Score.
And, probably obvious to everyone but me, but I only started watching Arrested Development 2 months ago. I've been trying to ration out the new episodes before the new Netflix season starts. OMG, how did I not watch this before? Fucking love it.
Someone tell me, would I like Always Sunny in Philadelphia if I like Arrested Development? I'm going to need a good comedy to fill the void when I finish AD.

I've watched this, but end up being cranky with it because all I can think of is that they could never do this show set in the USA, because every other episode would be about insurance hassles.

I got utterly bored with it.
I haven't watched it because for some reason I got it into my head that Doc Marten was a murder mystery type show, a la Marple or Murder, She Wrote. I love both of those shows but glad to know this one is different. Might have to give it a couple episode watches.

Ha, I did think of that sometimes, too. But I liked some of the medical mysteries and I loved Louisa. And this little nutter, Mrs. Tishel:
The first episode I saw on PBS that made me go looking for the series was one involving some anti-vax idiots.
We just watched God Bless America on netflix last night. H and I were cackling hysterically throughout. It's a dark comedy, and there's lots of people getting shot up (shitty reality tv stars mostly), but you cheer at each and every one of them. Even my roommate who hates any violence in movies was happily watching. You feel a kind of smugness similar to when watching Idiocracy. Like, yes, this is everything that is wrong with the world today, and I'm the exception
And how did I come across this? Thanks to asdfjkl's gif of the tampon throwing girl. Yes, it is from this movie.
