Clearly we've passed the point of no return. This is what we did this weekend. I didn't realize how disturbed I'd be by the sight of it. Please god let it all go as planned!
Well, the destruction at the top is where our soffit used to be. We're putting in new 42'' cabinets that are in the process of being made. They'll look like this:
We're keeping the bottom cabinets but painting them white and putting in granite. We're also adding an island that will be painted BM Westcott Navy:
I think for the granite we're going with Kashmir White:
We're also putting in a new slide in hybrid induction range, new over the range microwave and a new dishwasher and an undermount sink! I'm really excited about the sink. The one we have now gets really gross where it sits on the counter.
Thanks! I know white kitchens are sort of trendy, but I think it's the best bet for our space. We're trying to make the room seem larger and lighter. I'm really looking forward to the extra storage space, too.
It's going to be gorgeous! I love those light fixtures, and I love the trend toward islands being done in colors that contrast with the main cabinets. Can't wait to see it!
Awww thanks you guys! I've been agonizing over the decisions so I appreciate the votes of confidence!
@FoxInFiji - Ahhhh no! The demo was actually much harder and messier than we thought it would be, but it was our first time doing it so we thought it would be like on HGTV where you swing a sledgehammer and viola! I'm trying to tell myself that there's no way putting the drywall and cabinets in can be as hard as taking them out. Ignorance is bliss =)
kaylie - LOL ignorance is bliss! Well I guess since you were actually trying to keep a lot of your walls that makes it more difficult. We wanted to keep our ceilings so we went around all of the seams where the walls meet with a Sonicrafter and then pulled/kicked off the drywall. Do you have one of those? They are the best power tool ever! I can't even tell you how many times we've used it in tight spaces or to replace other more basic tools.

We have a Dremel that I probably should have used. I probably would have gotten a cleaner edge than I did with the hammer. Whoops. What kind of attachment do you recommend? I might use it to try to clean up some of the edges. The contractor doing the electrical is coming tonight and I think we're going to have him install the new drywall too, so I'll see how big of a problem I've created then.
I'm kind of glad we did this gut before the bathroom (which will be a smaller job) because if we'd done the bathroom first we probably would have wimped out and hired someone for this.
Gah awful wallpaper border from the previous owner!
It made mudding the corners nice and easy. We also used it for a bunch of holes we had to cut to run electrical lines or add bracing to an existing wall. Anyway it's just a really handy little tool to have.
