I've always used duvet covers with down comforters . I've never used a quilt before and I am considering buying one for decorating my daughters "big girl" bed -3 years old. The one I want is Pottery Barn Woodlands, its 100% cotton. I've always seen quilts pictured with a flat sheet underneath, or used under a duvet. I want to use the quilt by itself.
The PB quilts feel soft in the store, but it might feel differently draped over the whole body. I want to use it all year round. Do you think this will be scratchy or uncomfortable? I would be buying my set from Ebay so I cannot return it

I don't think it would be scratchy, but depending on where you live it may not be warm enough in the winter if used by itself. I would probably put a lightweight down (or down alternative) comforter between the flat sheet and quilt in the winter.
I don't know about that specific one but I have quilts on 3 of my beds. 1 was handmade, one was from JCP and one from Overstock. None are scratchy at all. I guess it just depends.
Is there a reason you don't want a flat sheet underneath? I'd use one just for cleanliness sake. Quilts aren't all that easy to wash on the regular and IME seem to wear faster than say a duvet from too much washing.

I'm wondering the same thing. Due to the amount of stitching, they tend to wear fast in the washing machine. I'd definitely use a flat sheet to avoid having to wash it every week.

I've just never seen a need for flat sheets since I've always used duvet covers. I just wash the duvet cover, which to me , is the same as washing a sheet.
Also a flat sheet doesn't stay in place. It's easier for my little kids to learn make their own beds with no flat sheet.

We have one and aside from clear nail polish on the back (thanks Monkey), it's getting handed down to Baby W after 4 years of heavy use and it looks pretty good. A tiny bit faded (but that's all my fault), but still in great condition.

Our PBK quilt has held up well, and it isn't scratchy. I do have another thin cotton blanket between the quilt and his fitted sheet, though. He's a hot sleeper and doesn't need anything more, even in winter.
I have a PBK quilt for DS. It'a madra or something? I don't remember. I like it a lot and it isn't scratchy. He uses it without a top sheet. He just got tangled up in the flat sheet and it was frustrating for him. So I didn't use one. It was great for the in-between seasons (fall and spring). In the summer he doesn't use anything. In the winter he has a comforter with a duvet and the quilt on top. That works great. Honestly, I don't see a white quilt holding up particularly well to being washed regularly. His quilt has darker colors so it doesn't show wear. I wash it every other week in the winter and weekly in the summer. It has held up well.

I don't know how they wash over time, ours our fairly new. But I asked a friend before I bought ours, and she had hand me downs that went through two kids, many are now on kid 3, and they look brand new.
We have the alligator blue and white stripe toddler quilt from PBK. I wash it once a week and it has held up great, the dark colors are still dark and the white is still white. I think they are really one of the softest quilts out there for kids. We use a flat sheet, then a soft fleece and then the quilt in the winter, but they are soft enough if you didn't want a sheet.
I gave up on sheets for my kids, since they inevitably end up around their ankles every.single.night. They sleep with a quilt (not even a nice one from pottery barn). They don't complain about scratchiness so I think it's a non-issue. I only wash them once a month. Top sheets don't get nearly as dirty as bottom sheets.

I use flat sheets for DH and I, but not the kids. They kick them all over and end up with the quilts up next their skin anyway. And I don't wash kids sheets weekly anyway, they don't get dirty or stinky that fast. They are more likely to spill something on their quilt before they are likely to get it dirty just from touching it in bed at night, in my experience. Suckers, markers, milk, etc etc etc. don't ask how it gets in the bedroom, the rule is kitchen only, I have no idea.
