We have a very small bathroom...6x8 is my estimate without going to measure. Currently the toilet and the shower are on the same wall. In the next 5 years I think we will have to redo the room and I am trying to gather up inspiration now. Anybody have an awesome tiny family bath? We only have 1.5 bathrooms and this is the only one on the main floor (bungalow) so we have to make it 'work'.

It is 5 ft wide by 8 ft long. The only bathroom in the house.
The first pic is looking in the door. Second pic is me standing in the tub, looking out of the room. Third pic is to give you an idea of the space between the tub, toilet, and vanity.
The vanity size is great compared to a pedestal sink, and thanks to the lack of hall closet in the house we desperately need the cabinets under the sink to store stuff. The best thing about the bathroom is the huge medicine cabinet above the sink, so we can fit a ton of stuff there. The wall across from the sink and toilet has two towel bars, and the back of the door also had a towel bar and 2 hooks.
I think the layout and design work as well as they possibly could given the tiny space. It honestly doesn't bother me to have that small of a bathroom (in fact I think big ones are a waste) but DH hates it. Drives him bonkers.
So small its hard to get a decent picture. And we only have a stall shower. No bathtub :-( its nothing fabulous for sure, but its functional.
It actually has decent storage for its size, but I've also had to seriously pare down what we keep in there. Only bathroom stuff gets to stay. Nothing that can be done elsewhere like hair dryers, make-up, etc.
We're in the same boat - 1.5 bath, full upstairs, half downstairs. We've gutted the half bath, but the full bath is still laid out as-original. As such, the layout is not particularly inspired. Eventually we'll gut this one too. My FIL is a kitchen & bath designer, so we're going to let him tell us what will work best with the space we have.
I think our old bathroom was 5x5 -- so tiny! Pics are in my bio. One thing I did was replace a bigger footprint sink with a small pedastool sink. It seems counterintuitive because I lost some storage space, but it made the room seem much more open. I placed a small cabinet next to it to give some counter space and storage space. Great paint color and a white shower curtain helped a lot too.

I have a full bath (well 3/4) that is no joke probably 3x8. thankfully it is a second full in the house. I would post pictures but in a room that small it is nearly impossible to even take photos.
I agree with the PP that said that is pretty standard size and I would probably just keep the layout and change out the aesthetics. It can make a huge difference.
Our main bathroom was the standard 5x8.5' in a lovely goldenrod color with faux black marble seashell sink:
We renovated it and now it looks like this (same view from the door):
We added only 3' to the room and it feels like a much larger space. The new layout has a lot better flow. The tub/shower stayed in the same spot and the toilet portion is what we added. The sink was just rotated around so there was minimal plumbing to move.
Better view toward the door...don't mind the improvised door stop we're not quite finished with the remodel.
In the old bathroom it wasn't possible for two people to be getting ready at the same time. The door swing covered have of the open floor space. But in the new bathroom we can both be in there no problem.
Do you have any adjacent space you can steal from a closet or bedroom?
My mom has a pretty small main bathroom that functions well. I don't have any photos, so I will try to describe it.
They combo bath/shower spans the width of the room, on the back wall. Right next to the tub, on the right wall is the toilet, and the next to that, spanning the full length from the door to the toilet is a cabinet with the sink and counter. There is an in-wall medicine cabinet right next to the door, and the requisite 1950s gigantic mirror over the sink cabinet.
The towel bar is on the left wall, but because everything else is on the right, it is pretty roomy. It never seemed cramped sharing it with my siblings and my mom.
we have a super tiny 4x5 3/4 bath upstairs that is our 'luxurious' master bath. when we remodel, we are planning on doing frameless glass shower stall to maximize the space. we were thinking of a pedestal sink, but the storage issue might be problematic since this is our master bath. I think we are going to stew on it and come up with some clever use of space ideas for a li8ttle longer before prioritizing this remodel.
I don't have any pictures of mine, but here are some of my inspiration pictures. The first two are from Freckles Chick and the last one is from Sarah Richardson.
