Ugh, I gotta stay of FB. As most of you know, a good portion of people are changing their profile pictures to the equality signs. But with that, there are a few people who have changed their profile pictures to anit-gay marriage profile photos to counteract that. I get it, people use FB as a place to voice their views, and I respect that not all opinions are the same.
But it is SUPER frustrating to me to read the "Christians" arguments on the matter. Well, I shouldn't say all Christians, just the ignorant ones. Seriously, I want to bash my head into the wall reading their posts. Really, are you that fucking hateful?
I just got to vent. I have typed out many responding posts but end up erasing them before posting. I know FB is not the place for healthy debate (especially with people who have such narrow minded views) but I am going to go insane. Ugh. Anyone else going crazy with me?!
I know, I really should hide these people! Why have I not done that yet?!
And yes, Kendra's photo was awesome I really have no idea why gay marriage is an issue in 2013.
The sad thing is I vote for Republican's most every election I really wish the Republican party would distance themselves from the Religious Right. I really think that they will never win another Presidential Election unless they do so.
Or what would be even better if a new party emerged that was socially left and fiscally right. The only reason why I vote Republican is because I think fiscal issues are a bigger issue for America than social.
The differing opinions on FB don't bother me because I certainly can't judge someone else politicizing their FB feed when I did it myself. I try not to jump into politics on FB too often, but I couldn't hold back on this issue. Our government is actually paying me to go advocate for rights for LGBT folks in other countries. How could I do that if I don't support those rights at home? That being said, a friend of mine that supports marriage equality posted a joke this morning that was a picture of Justice Kennedy saying "Now that FB has been overtaken by red equal signs, I have no choice but to support gay marriage."
Even though I got a chuckle out of it and that friend and I agree on this issue, I was tempted to post a comment to the effect that I think that, while the outpouring of support on FB is inspiring, marriage equality is not an issue that should be decided in the court of public opinion. The reason that Prop 8 is unconstitutional is precisely because fundamental human rights are to be guaranteed and protected under our Constitution regardless of how few or how many people agree with them. No one got to vote on whether or not I could marry my husband, so why should I have the right to vote on whether or not someone else gets married? That's why, though I'm happy to hear that the most recent polls show over half of the country now agrees with granting the same rights to same sex partnerships, I think whether or not we agree as individuals is irrelevant.
