I have always preferred "Leila."

As far as I know, this would be true if the name were of European origin, but since it's Arabic, the "Lei" syllable is pronounced "lay."

I think both Leila and Layla are pronounced the same.

Lela is also a legit name too.

Ugh!  I was having a brain fart on the traditional way of spelling Mekhi, that's how we'd spell it too.  I'm white, my H is black.  So, I want a name that works but isn't "too white" or "too black."  I'm afraid Mekhi and Malik are "too black." 

Oh, I also like Malachi, but he hates it.

I was going to suggest Malachi as an option similar to your girls' names. Sad he doesn't like it.
