I climbed a Buddha at Borobudur. I have a picture of me inside of a bell at the Prambanan. I'm appalled at myself, because I didn't respect what an honor it was for me to experience those things.
That's how I've felt when I've seen great pieces of art. I'm just in awe of it.

I get tears in front of so many art works.
I was the exact same way. It just felt so surreal seeing some of it. Reading and studying was nothing compared to seeing some of my favourite works of art. I would really love to see some Dali paintings. He fascinates me.
I mentioned this to my DH and he asked why they would want to risk an Egyptian jail. I think he has a good point as that can't be pleasant. This type of thing really upsets me. I see it all of the time at the National Parks, and I hate that people can't follow some simple rules to help preserve our wonders for future generations.
I saw starry night as part of a traveling exhibit and I spent a good 10 minutes in front of it. It is impossible to see how beautiful it is without seeing it in person. It's different experience altogether.
However, a part of me is shrugging at the pyramid stuff. Bias!

I get having the desire to do this, but I wish they hadn't. Enough damage has been done to Egyptian artifacts. When I was in Cairo in 2009 I saw a lot of hostility toward Russian tourists. Our guide explained it to us, but the short version is that theres is a stereotype that Russians don't respect Egyptian and Muslim culture. I cant imagine that this will help things.

This was one thing I thought was weird when we were at Rijksmuseum. I've seen tons of images of The Night Watch, but nothing was like standing right in front of it. Very powerful. But I was irritated by SO MANY PEOPLE who had to get a picture standing in front of it with their point and shoot. I mean, I get having the memory, but there's no way a photo captures the experience of standing in front of it.
I am still kicking myself that we didn't make it to the Van Gogh museum. We suck.
Hmm, to be honest I'd be tempted too if I knew the guide was open to being bribed. I mean talk about a once in a lifetime opportunity. But I think ultimately I would try to resist. I wouldn't want to risk potentially damaging them.
