Definitely not a new thing. I remember buying a book once as a young teenager because I thought some movie I had liked was based on the book, and it turned out to be a crappy spinoff book. (ETA: I don't remember the movie, but I'm old, so this was a long time ago.) I've seen them before for TV shows too. I've never read one since that one experience, but I'm willing to bet the writing is consistently bad.

I don't think it's a new thing. Once at a charity book sale I saw a whole bunch of Brady Bunch books, and I know there was a series of Murder, She Wrote mystery books.

This happened to me with Panic Room. I actually returned that book for a refund!
