Aren't you supposed to smash them on the kids' heads for good luck? Totally serious question!
Yes you are!
They are called cascarones and it's a Mexican tradition at Easter time. My mother has the best smashing skills of everyone. Just when you least expect it BAM! she gets you with an egg.
I used to save eggs all year long to make them but I don't anymore since we don't have any little ones around anymore.

Ha DH's dad sent us a bunch, except they came from Texas and only one of them survived the trip. I just got a box full of broken egg shells and confetti.

This is hilarious! Would she do one for each kid? Was it for luck? Did she make the eggs or get them somewhere? I'm seriously considering adopting this tradition.

We used to make dozens of them because we always wanted lots of them. She'd keep some for herself and then whack us on the head.
You can buy them but they are so easy to make and it's fun.
Save your egg shells by breaking a small hole in the end and then shaking out the egg. Dye the shells, fill them with confetti and cover the hole with a circle of tissue paper and glue or you can use a sticker.

My mom mailed us a dozen from Texas when we lived in NJ. Natalie loved them, but it was cold outside so we did them in the house. He fave was to smush them on the cat. Sorry Lily, bwahahaha.
