It's a small big city but expanding a lot. Do you know what area the company is in?
There are a lot of nice suberbs around Ft Worth to look at living in. The COL is relatively low, compared to other parts of the country. It's about an hour fron Dallas, 3-3.5 hrs from Austin, 4-4.5 from San Antonio.
Ft. Worth is a big city, but not as big as Dallas or Austin. Dallas and Ft. Worth are only about 45 minutes apart, so it is all considered one giant metroplex, kind of like the Twin Cities. COL is pretty reasonable. There are lots of suburbs with nice homes around $150,000, it would be more within the city.
Downtown Ft. Worth is nice. There's a lot of great museums, and restaurants. It's clean and safe. I know plenty of interracial couples and none have had any problems that I know of.
My non official ranking of Texas cities is 1. Austin 2. Ft. Worth 3. Denton 4. Those are the only livable cities in Texas.
My brother lives there and loves it. It is close to Dallas and only a few hours from Austin. I love Austin... My H and I have talked about moving there, since his job often has openings there.
It's a non huge city with relatively low cost of living..we first lived in SW Ft. worth which I didn't like all that much, and now we live closer to downtown, which I really enjoy...we are in the cultural district and there's lots to do by way of entertainment, restaurants, etc. Dallas isn't too far (45 min. Avg) for when I HAVE to go..we are an interracial couple and its really common here, especially among Hispanics. Oh and the Tex Mex..once you have it, you'll never leave
I live in NW Fort Worth. I am a huge fan of the city because it is a large city but still has a smaller city feel. I work in downtown and my commute in at the peak of rush hour is 25 min. Without traffic it's a 15 minute drive. COL is low, our house was $67/square foot. We bought it as a builder bankruptcy foreclosure, but even when the builder was still in business our neighbors paid around $80/sq ft. If you are active, we have a good trail system for running and biking and there are many parks, etc. There are lots of things to do with children and lots of things to do just as adults.
We are not an interracial couple, but we have quite a few friends/acquaintances that are and they have never mentioned an problems. As it is Texas, there are the idiots that you have in many rural parts of the nation that are still stuck in their ways, but in the city and the surrounding suburbs/smaller cities, you really should not have any discomfort.
We lived in Fort Worth for about five years (Blue Mound, actually, which is north FW) and loved it. I moved there straightaway after living in London, and it didn't feel small to me at all (we lived there roughly 2000-2004-ish). Much better "feel" than Dallas - safer, friendlier. But Dallas is close enough that if you want to do something there, it's a pretty easy drive. Cost of living was low, low, low when we were there. No state income tax, which is nice. We love where we currently live, but would have no problem at all moving back.
Good schools, good jobs, nice people, mostly good weather, great airport, good mix of metropolitan/rural activities.
Ft. Worth is big enough to have everything you would need on a daily basis, with easy access to Dallas (they are considered twin cities also) if you wanted something else. Cost of living is low, and there are a lot of different nice neighborhoods to choose from.
I know Texas has a bad reputation, and I've lived here most of my life and can't argue with all of it, but I've actually never know an interracial couple of have any issues, even in the smaller towns. I think you would be perfectly comfortable in the city.
And you will laugh when people around you are freezing and it is 35 degrees
My aunt and uncle are an interracial couple who got a giant house for about a quarter of what it would have cost up here in a suburb not too far from Ft. Worth. They seem happy there.
My non official ranking of Texas cities is 1. Austin 2. Ft. Worth 3. Denton 4. Those are the only livable cities in Texas.
Houston should be tied up there with Austin
ETA: Sorry I'm no help about Ft. Worth. Never been there. Yes, there are crazies in Texas. But if you're in a metropolitan city, you a little more insulated from them. For example, Houston is the 4th largest city in the US, has an openly gay mayor, and Harris County was split 50/50 in the presidential election last year. We're not all nuts
