I woke myself up puking. Thought I was dreaming, but it was real. I haven't been able to hold down anything including water. It's also, ahem, coming out the other end. (sorry, so gross I know!)
I'm pretty sure this is food poisoning, but I don't really know. I don't want to deal with going to the doctor unless this goes on for longer than a day. So, how long should I expect this to go on if it is food poisoning?
It usually lasts 24 hours. You'll probably feel off for the next 48 to 72 though. Start with ice chips when you're thirsty. If you start to feel faint because you haven't kept even ice chips down you need to go to the doc. That's when you're seriously dehydrated and they'll need to get fluids in you.
Good to know. I will try the ice chips, I feel so dehydrated already. ugh
about 24 hours. if you vomit a significant number of times or cannot keep any liquid or ice down, you should go to get IV fluids and anti nausea meds.
i hope you don't have the bug i got because it lasts longer
What's a good brand of OTC anti-nausea medicine?
i honestly don't know, because if it is food poisoning or a stomach virus, OTC stuff is probably not going to do anything for you. i've had both before and nothing like pepto, alka seltzer, tums, etc. do anything. with the virus i had it actually made it worse because (the hospital said) anything that touched my stomach lining would come back up until the initial period was over.
you might call a pharmacist though? the stuff they give you at the hospital/urgent care is phernergan or another kind if that doesn't work for you (it makes me sick but for most people it works fine).

Hmm, interesting. I will wait it out before I go buy something OTC. Good idea on calling a pharmacist. I will do that this afternoon if this keeps up.
I'm not sure if you're supposed to use them right away or not. Sometimes they say it's good to just throw it all up, since your body is doing it to get rid of the bacteria. Someone else probably knows better about this than me tho.
Also, peppermint tea and ginger are supposed to be natural stomach settlers.
Ooh, I have peppermint oil and tea and ginger, I am going to try this. Thank you.
I agree with everyone else. The only thing I'll add is that when I had it last time, my sister brought me some pedialyte freezer pops to help keep me hydrated. They don't taste great, but they really helped.

I was thinking about going to the store to get some pedialyte, I didn't know they made popsicles. That sounds good.

yeah pedialyte or gatorade, etc. are good too if you can keep it down. follow the BRAT diet if you get hungry - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. bland and easy to digest is key.

if there's anything i can do let me know!
Ohhhh, yes! That is the acronym I was trying to remember. Thank you!! I am strangely hungry, probably because I have nothing inside me at all. I'm scared to eat, though. I'll start with very small bites.
