Can just kiss my ass. We are on day three and there is no way in sweet hell this kid is going to be potty trained by the end of the day. He's peeing in the potty as soon as you sit him on it but no poop, although he is taking off his underwear and pooping in corners when I walk out of the room. Asking us to go, ummm no.
and being dry overnight, hahahaha.
We have to go out today, we ran out yesterday and this kid can hold it like a champ but won't pee on a foreign potty yet. I have to go sign some paperwork today and we will be out for much longer than we were yesterday. I'm not sure if I should just throw a pull up on him or what.
I am not sure why I ever stopped drinking during the week.
Cleo-the problem is that he was pooping and taking off his diaper on his own. He was kind enough to put it into the diaper pail but the mess along the way was quite special.
I was thinking he isn't ready also but I can't handle the whole poop issue. The manual says straight to undies but I am thinking when we go out, for my sanity so we can go out, I might throw a pull up on him.

Are you above bribery? Is it what finally got DS trained. Took him less than two weeks of getting marks (1 for telling us he needed to pee, 3 for pooping in potty) for the 50 or 60 I told him he needed to get the Lego space shuttle that was left on the table for him to look longingly at the box. Small rewards were useless for getting fully trained for us.

I may have to try this also because he could give a crap less about a piece of candy.
Thanks, cleo! I know you are right, when I read that this works for so many people I was getting a little WTF am I doing wrong.

Hang in there. We also did a sticker chart and rewards system. It helped keep her motivated, plus we used started school as an incentive to do well. Also being able to go into the big pool (this is true for my sister's pool), so that helped light a fire under her.
We started it on a weekend so we could stick close to the house. Just tweak it to fit your needs, but stay strong in trying and if it really seems he is not quite ready, that's ok too.

I found the key to getting over foreign potty fear is distraction. With DD, we would look for shapes in the tiles, different colors, play I Spy, and sing songs. To begin with my goal was just to get her to sit down, from there I would use every trick I could think of to keep her there and relax. Sometimes we would be in the bathroom forever, but usually distracting worked.
We also bribed, but not with candy, because she didn't really care. We used band aids. She was at a stage where she thought they were so cool, so she got to pick a Sesame Street bandaid every time she went potty. Maybe finding his currency will help.

DS1 was trained in a 3-day weekend about a month before he turned 3. We had tried before but it just wasn't clicking for him. Also we went to naked from the waist down. Underwear just seemed to give him the same confinement feeling as diapers and he didn't realize he couldn't just go anywhere and anytime.
He got peeing no problem. Pooping he avoided the best he could. So eventually I printed out pictures of what his rewards would be - candy corn, chocolate chip cookie, a new train for his tracks (he's train obsessed), banana bread and then the big prize was the Vtech Alphabet Train. He liked helping me put the marks on the reward chart.
We do Pull-Ups at night. He wakes up dry 95% of the time and will go in the little potty in his room in the middle of the night by himself if he needs to go. I really think it was all about waiting until he was ready despite how much I hated dirty toddler diapers up to that point.
Yeah, there's no way either of my kids could have been trained in 3 days. I didn't even attempt it! LOL We used M&Ms - 1 for pee and 2 for poop. They seemed to work pretty well, eventually. They were both in pull-ups at night for a long time after they were potty trained during the day. And they both wore pull-ups during the day at the beginning of potty training. I didn't sweat it too much. DS was WAY easier to potty train than DD because he wanted to do everything like she did. But neither of my kids removed their own diapers. EEK! Sorry your kid's going that route with the poop. Maybe another reward for not taking off the pull-up unless you're there with him?

It took L 4 days.
And she still wears pullups to bed. She has absolutely no desire to wear undies to bed because, "I love my diapers mommy, they're so soft and they have dora on them." I've told her I'd buy her dora undies - but no dice.
not that this relates to being dry during the day, but my pedi said dry overnight/naps could take until kids are 4-6. that's physiological, not psychologial, so you can't "train" for it the same way. my kid's been in underwear during the day for 7 months now with maybe 2 accidents, but still wears a diaper at night and for naps and only wakes up dry maybe 30% of the time.
Jack was 3 years and 3 months and also potty trained himself. Bribery, 3 day potty training etc etc didn't work. He had to want it, lol, to make it be successful. Hang in there!
I don't know how old he is, but he may just not be ready. I know boys and girls are different, but we waited until just before DD #1 turned 3 and she was trained in 3 days flat. I know diapers suck, but they are easier than cleaning up crap all the time, and an older kid is more able to control themselves and understand the sensation of needing to go.
I am very potty laid back. As in, I am not interested in the battle. It is one of the few things they have complete control over an I they don't want to do it, they won't. Thi drags out the process.
Mason likes to occasionally hop on the potty. We celebrate when he does, but it's all his idea. When he's more interested, we will do it more frequently. This is what we did with Libby and it worked well. She was done within one day.
Overnight, as cville said, is physiological. It's not uncommon for a kid to wear a pull-up overnight until 4 or 5.
Oh yeah Jack still struggles with overnight and he is 5. If we wake him up to pee when we go to bed he can stay dry all night. But otherwise he sleeps to hard and potentially will pee the bed.
DD was 3 for daytime. And I will tell you I was a slacker and put her in pull ups when we went out for a while. She wore underwear at home, but pull ups when we went out. One day she wanted to wear big girl underwear out and I caved, but she did great. We just hit the potty as soon as we got there just to be sure.
Oh, and don't worry about over night. Put him in a pull up overnight. Get the daytime down first.
Thanks, everyone! I was going to wait until summer but the whole taking his diaper off situation threw us for a loop and I thought we would try it. I think we are going to keep at it and do pull ups when we go out and at night for now.
