when this happened I stopped eating and went on a liquid diet. it helped remove demands on my system and I slowly introduced "safe" foods. after a couple days I was able to tolerate my typical diet.
jjwritergirl I do Gatorade, apple juice, and water. You can do chicken broth too. (Beware that sugar can increase inflammation - I can't remember if you have IBD or IBS).
Next level of foods (when I start to feel better) is mashed potatoes, applesauce, plain mashed sweet potato no skin. Then I'll add things like banana smoothies and white rice until I can work my way back up to lean meats.
Don't always just blame it on the food. Sometimes, it can be that your current medication is no longer working. Over time, your body builds up a tolerance (and sometimes reaction) to many of the common medications used for IBD. I think it's really important that you maintain a regular conversation with your GI and pinpoint what the problem is. Is it a flare triggered by stress that can be treated with 1)reduction in stress and 2)short term drug therapy? Is it a flare triggered by poor choice of foods? Course, that's the easiest to resolve Or, is the flare triggered by medication that's no longer working?
I waited too long and tried to "self medicate" with diet changes and it made things so much worse because, essentially, my disease was out of control with no medication working on it. I had grown a tolerance to my current med. When I finally gave in and saw my GI, I was too far gone and the damage was too much to rebound from. This is especially the case when you're taking TNF blockers like Humira, Remicade, and Cimzia.
