ok, i'll admit, i'm not perfect. but i never use words like ain't or don't when it should be doesn't.
my cousin has a teaching degree. all of my family agreed that none of us would trust our children to learn in her class. i know that's sad, but it's true.
here is her fb post:
'Givin my son a bath & gettin 1 myself from all his splashing! lol i love him. he usually dont make a mess like this.'
i just don't understand why she doesn't read that and realize how terrible it sounds. he usually don't make a mess like this? what does that mean?
also, i deleted her on fb a while ago, and then she'd comment on everyone's post and beg me to accept her friend request. i did to make things better and no family drama, but now i'm remembering why i deleted her in the first place.
that's really annoying. i have a friend who is similarly frustrating. she's very proud of her english major from UW, but can't use you/you're correctly or spell. then fights, when people tell her "adieu" is not spelled "adoo".

I have a flameworthy opinion related to this. In my experience, English majors have some of the worst spelling and grammar skills of B.A. degree-holders. I don't quite know why. Social sciences majors (political science, psychology, etc.) seem to be among the best. My theory is that the social science disciplines require more "concrete" writing and reading; e.g., reading and comprehending many complicated peer-reviewed journal articles and writing theses and long papers on the subjects. English majors' reading, meanwhile, is much more literary.
For the record, this opinion is based on several friends and acquaintances; three were UW English majors.
Poli. sci./women's studies with a psychology minor here. I don't know, maybe it's a crackpot theory, but I swear it's true in my experience. I lovelovelove my (UW English major) BFF, but her grammar can be pretty poor at times.
