I've never heard of that before. Mexicans don't cut baby boys' hair until they are 1 year old, no matter how long it is and they would never shave a baby girl's head. EVER.
God, I wasn't allowed to get my hair cut until I turned 13!

I have heard of this in Chile. My friend actually just had a baby, and they gave her a buzz cut, but I'm not sure if that was to make her hair better in the future or because an even buzz cut was cuter than scraggly longer hair.

That is not a Cuban thing, at all. Although, regular normal haircuts are a must for length. Interestingly enough I've only ever cut my DD's hair once and her hair is fuller than mine and down to her dang 3 year old butt crack. So take that crazy Cuban mom!

Dude, yes they do! They're all about shaving babies heads down here. I got pressure for the whole first year to shave Cambria's head!

My mom said that my Indian babysitter kept pushing her to shave my head when I was wee. I was born with red hair that all fell out and grew back in very light blonde (and very slowly). I already looked bald and my mom couldn't bring herself to shave off what little hair had just started coming back.
I guess so. My mother would have beaten me with her chancla if I shaved my daughter's head!
I swear, we have to be related.
Or Mexicans really are stereotypical!
My mom cried when I finally had my hair cut at 11. We also don't cut hair until after the 1st birthday. My nephew's hair was so cute a curly!
Were you allowed to have your hair loose or was it always in trenzas? I think this is a mexican thing (or latino) too.
OMG! Trenzas every day of my life until I started the 7th grade. We stood in an assembly line.
My mother braided my older sister's hair. I stood in front of my older sister while she braided my hair and my little sister stood in front of my while I braided her hair. I remember she used to cry that she didn't get to do "trenzas" so my mother made her a doll and she braided her doll's hair.
I haven't put braids in my hair since I was a kid. I hate them now!

We were too close in age to do this, but my brother and dad learned how to braid our hair. They had to do it at night when my mom was in college. I JUST started putting my hair in in a trenza now because I'm trying to get it to grow and break less. When my mom was here last weekend, she offered to do it for me while I was getting ready and I said no. I kind of wish I would've said yes though. Mom hair pets are the best!

Next time you see your mom let her do it. My mom can't do it anymore.

I will. I usually ask her to play with my hair when I see her, but I was rushing to get ready for work. As soon as they left that morning, I had this huge regret that I didn't let her.

I have a friend from Colombia that was just talking about this. She wants to do it to her baby girl because it is the norm for her culture but her American husband is against it. She feels torn.
I never heard of this before and now twice in one week.
