I had something similar happen, it's how I found out I had macular degeneration at 19.
ETA: But I would go with the migraine theory. I get this crap a lot with migraines but it did make me go to an eye doctor to see if there was a bigger cause.

The worst migraine I ever had, after my hormones crashed out when Lucy was born, made me blind in the middle of my eyes. It only lasted a few moments but it was TERRIFYING. Do you get migraines normally?
Fun story: Last Tuesday, my grandpa (who's 92) poked himself in the eye while washing his (crew cut) hair. Friday, my mom gets a call from his eye doctor saying my grandpa needs someone to take him to Wichita (they live about an hour away) for emergency eye surgery. Somehow, he detached his cornea and punctured the globe of his eye. The moral of the story: be glad you're not an 92 year old man.

migraine aura or an ocular/optical migraine. I get them once in a while, but I don't get a headache/migraine after or it's a mild headache from the eyestrain of looking at the shimmer.
That's pretty similar to what I get just before I get a migraine. It can be something else and I forget what it's called so yes, do see your doctor. Something not terribly serious, treatable.
Wow, yeah. I'm looking these terms up and it matches almost exactly. Thanks. It was so weird. It's been two hours. I wonder if I'm going to get off easy with no headache. Mayo Clinic says sometimes that happens.
They can happen a day or so after too. I've gotten where the migraine only showed up 24+ hours later.

I've had the vision stuff happen before, a few times. But I have been lucky and not had an actual migraine after. It is really freaky when it happens, though.
I had this last week and almost instantly got a headache and really nauseous. My h had to one home from work and take care of the kids. It was gone after a few hours of sleep. I hope you don't get the headache!
