I am finally going in for my HSG tomorrow and am slightly nervous. I have never really had any medical procedures done before and am so afraid it is going to be more painful than I am anticipating. I plan on taking ibuprofen prior....any other advice?

It's really over before you know it. The worst part for me was all the old lady boobs I had to see. Since mine was done in a women's center I was in a waiting room with a bunch of way older ladies doing mammograms. No shame in their flashing the goods game.
Take the ibuprofen before, try to keep calm, if you are having it done in an imaging center or hospital bring a pad for the discharge after unless you are cool with hospital diaper sized pads. You might have some spotting and cramping afterward but it shouldn't be too bad at all.
I took ibuprofen and ativan because I was anxious before. It honestly was a piece of cake and I would have been fine without the ativan. It goes really fast and is over pretty quick.
If its any consolation, I have major anxiety over even going to the doctor for a well checkup. And I thought it wasn't bad. Good luck!
I don't want to be the bad news bear, but definitely take that ibuprofen. My HSG hurt like hell. The worst part for me was when they shot the dye in. And they had to do it twice, because the first time there was a problem with the dye. Other than that, it's over pretty quick. Mine was all clear, so we didn't find much out from it, but it was cool to see my lady parts on the screen
I hope you get good news! I have heard it can increase your fertility afterward, since the dye cleans you out a little.
I hope it goes smoothly and you have a good outcome.
Mine took longer than normal. They had to push dye a few times and for a while each time. They also had to grab my cervix and move my uterus around. It was uncomfortable. I was also pretty nauseated and dizzy for the rest of the day. I'd say bring crackers and a bottle of water in you bag in case you need something before standing/walking/driving. (I don't think it's common)
Don't be nervous, although I realize that's easier said than done. I was a nervous wreck before mine. In the end it was no big deal. It wasn't painful, but was really uncomfortable. Luckily, the procedure was quick and I had a very kind nurse (b/c the RE I was seeing at the time was an ass). I took 800 mg of Ibuprofen before I went. I was crampy and had a general feeling of ick after. Nothing a good chocolate croissant and hanging out on the couch for the rest of the afternoon couldn't fix.
Mine was not a big deal. I freaked out after reading stories online, but it was nothing like what I had read. I took two advil beforehand, and didn't have pain during or after. It was just really uncomfortable for a couple of minutes, but when it was over I was fine.
Good luck. I took an advil and an Excedrin beforehand and it still hurt but the pain lasted about 5 seconds then it was all over. I did mine at a hospital.
Ditto on taking a pad with you and make sure you eat (I didn't and nearly fainted).

GL! Mine wasn't comfortable at all. But, they had to put in more dye to see if they could clear the minor blockage (which they think then did, though I'm still not pregnant. ).
It was definitely more painful than I was anticipating, even after 600mg of ibuprofen, but wasn't horrible. It hurt from the time the speculum went in until after it was over and everything was removed. I had it done at the hospital I work at and the nurse and Rad tech were both GREAT....trying to keep me talking to distract me from the pain. The radiologist said that my R side is totally clear and I don't remember her saying anything about the L side and of course I forgot to ask. Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement! I am so glad that it is over with and will hopefully get the official results from my ob/gyn early next week.
speyedr I'm glad it ultimately went well! Sorry it was uncomfortable, mine was, too. The friggin machine stopped working correctly while I was on the table. I was there for an hour while they figured it out, but the pain really didn't subside during that time. It was totally ridiculous.
The doctor and nurses were so sorry, but it's not like it was their fault. I definitely ordered a crazy amount of take-out that night as a treat. Be good to yourself!
