hind limb paresis

Anyone have any experience with hind limb paresis in small dogs? My almos-10yo Boston is suffering from it now. Vet shot him up with steroids and valium yesterday, and we have tablets for the weekend. He is calm mostly, but clearly having trouble still walking around. The vet said he may just get better over the weekend, but if not we will need to consider invasive surgery without guarantee it will work. I don't know that I could put him through that. I also don't know if his getting around better today is improvement or good drugs. I don't really know what I'm asking.. I'm just a mess.

The paresis is due to partially fused discs and one bulging one below the rib cage. No fall or injury, just noticed weird and worsening gait over the last week and yesterday he showed signs of stress (panting/snorting) so we took him in.
