i'm wanting to change the curtains in my son's room to red, for when his little sister joins him in the room (until we get to move to a bigger place). the red will tone down how much the room has evolved from gender neutral to very much a boy's room--at least back to the point of a more gender neutral space.
i would just as soon go with an inexpensive option, rather than buy all new curtains.
I have dyed drop cloth curtains, to the color blue. To be honest I wasn't real thrilled with the results- it looked like denim. Red may be different, but I would just go buy some inexpensive red curtains from Target or BB&B. There's a chance you may get more of a pinky-red, and the whole process (dying so much fabric) is a pain.
Go to Walmart and buy a few red flat sheets, if you want them to be more blackout buy a black flat sheet as well, sew them together get curtain clips and BAM curtains. Obviously you would need to hem them if you don't have your rod mounted that high.
How about adding a red band trim on the inside edges of the curtains? Or adding red roman shades with the plain side panels? Red is a difficult color to dye .

this is a clever solution i hadn't thought of. one of the reasons i was leaning toward drop cloth as an option was because it would be more light blocking. after 3 months in a bassinet in our room our baby girl will be share my DS's room, and i would like to have more light blocking than we had with him. we went the super inexpensive curtain route with him and it just didn't block the light like i hoped. but, a black flat sheet attached may very well accomplish what i want.....we'll see.
