Are they ever @ or under $200/night? I am going in September and have been watching prices for weeks. I cannot find anything under close to $800 for 3 nights after taxes/fees. Should I suck it up and book now or is it likely prices will ever drop? Or worse, increase...
I cannot bid on Priceline because there are 3 couples, we need 2 rooms for 3 nights and an additional room for 1 night. I cannot find an option to split room dates under one reservation and we'd like to stay at the same hotel.

I am looking to stay in Union Square or the Financial District. I of course would love a 4* hotel. I tried searching to see if there was anything going on that weekend and cant find anything. Then again I dont even know what I'd be looking for. I've never been to CA so I had no clue what was average for a hotel. I signed up on a bunch of email lists, travel site notifications, etc and nothing seems to be coming up for deals in Sept.

Under $200 is unlikely for a nice hotel unless you catch a special offer. I know you said you don't want to Priceline, but considering that SF neighborhoods are relatively small (ie. you can walk pretty much anywhere within Union Square East), would it be worth it to Priceline just one neighborhood and stay within a couple blocks of each other? You say you've never been to SF, so I just wonder if you're imagining that different hotels would be far apart, and that's not necessarily the case.

Yes, there are cheaper hotels in San Francisco. I normally stay at the Metro Hotel. The rooms are small and there are no frills, but the staff is friendly and helpful. I started staying there originally because I used to visit SF on a per diem and they have rooms under $100/night. But I go back because they are friendly. You will probably want to take a bus if you stay somewhere further out like that (there are a lot of similar hotels in SF), but rides are only $2 and it's only about 15 minutes from Union Square.
We stayed at the Hilton near union square for right around $200 a night- booked through I think hotels.com... Or expedia, one of those. It was during crazy summer travel time, too.
My parents are going over labor day for my dads bday and I booked them at the golden gate hotel, it received good reviews on trip advisor and they aren't pickey it was $175/night
We just opened a Chase Hyatt card, paid the $75 annual fee, bought one thing with it (less than $5) and got 2 free nights at a Hyatt anywhere in the World, and redeemed it for the Grand Hyatt Union Square for Sept 6 and 7. It is $300+ a night normally. Maybe do that and you would be paying less than $400 for 3 nights hotel, if that makes sense.

I have only been looking at 4 star hotels. My mom was able to get $195/night at Sir Francis Drake with her H's AARP card. She pre-paid the night she wont be there so my sis and I could have that rate. I am going to keep searching for a better deal but we have something booked in case nothing better comes along.
