DH and I will be in Berlin, Dusseldorf and the Rome area in September. Does anyone know of rail passes, especially in Rome, we can buy to avoid the constant need to buy tickets? We are only in Berlin for about 23 hours as we have a long layover en route to Rome, about 20 hours in Dusseldorf en route to LAX and 3 days in Rome after our Med. cruise.
We had originally looked into the Roma Pass in Rome but since we are booking the underground tour and such for the Colisseum (include the Forum), not sure the Roma Pass would be a good option for us at $30EURO each.
I can't speak on Berlin or Duseldorf, but the Roma pass is definitely not worth it. Rome is very walkable and if you do need to take transit you can buy a single use ticket. I think we used public transportation a total of 3 times during the three days we were there. And two of those times were getting to and from the train station.
For Berlin and Dusseldorf you are going to need a one day city transport pass. I don't know what airport you are coming from in Berlin but we took a Bus out of the airport as there is no train/tram from there.
Just go to a visitor desk once you arrive at the airport and ask for a one day pass. Make sure it includes the airport. Some of the time they are out of the normal zone and you need to pay extra.

Sounds like a great trip!! I would normally say that the Roma Pass is a great deal if you were going to be staying longer than you are. Rome is very walkable, but the bus system is very comprehensive and helpful in getting from A-->B without too much trouble. Enjoy Rome...it's one of my very favorite places!

For dusseldorf you should be able to get a day ticket at the same place you would buy non-day tickets and there's a button to translate it to English. You'd want to get price group A for a day ticket, which is the cheapest option for day tickets. It's less than 6 Euros per person and I believe that includes the airport. The airport to city tickets are normally 2.40 or 2.50 each way, so it's worth it to get the day pass even though D-dorf is a pretty walkable city.

If you fly to Tegal, you will need to take a bus and the tickets can be bought from a vending machine with an English button. If you fly to Schönefeld in Berlin, then you will be taking the train into the city and need to get a ticket for that, but I believe you can get a day pass that can be used for all transportation in the city, but no idea what the cost is now (probably around 8-10 Euros per person per day) since I haven´t lived there in 10 years.
