I don’t know if I belong here, but I thought this would be the best place to start. I’m hoping you can give some insight.
My H & I already have a child (tried for 7 mths, she was conceived right after a miscarriage); we’ve been trying for #2 since June 2012; and I’ll be 40 in October.
About me: I’ve tried charting, but that only works when you remember to take your temp – I wake up in a rush in the morning & end up forgetting to take my temp, which I admit is my own fault. I used the CBE fertility monitor for 4 with no results, so I took a break from it & went back to CBE digital OPKs (had success with those re: child #1). I’m getting positive OPKs – had 2 positives this month – but still not PG. My cycles range from 23 – 28 days, with positive OPK results ranging from day 13 to 16. My annual ob/gyn visit is scheduled for 5/30.
I guess my questions are: I need to buckle down & actually temp along with the OPKs, don’t I? And taking my age into consideration, between now & my appointment, I have 2 cycles; if this were you would you wait until your annual visit in May to talk to your doctor about this, or would you ask to schedule something sooner?
I want to call & ask for something sooner, but I’m afraid they’ll say we can discuss it at my appointment in May. I’m getting anxious.
Hi, and welcome! Sorry you're having issues - definitely feel free to hang around here.
In order to confirm ovulation, you'll have to temp. I have my alarm set for 4am every day, that way I can take it consistently, and then go back to sleep. You could even temp every other day, and you'll still get the trend. Most doctors will want a few months of charting
My OB/GYN said she'd start testing after a year of unprotected sex, or 6 months for AMA or well-timed/charted trying. We ended up at the RE about a year after we started trying, and my only regret is not going in sooner.
If you feel like calling now, call. Who gives a shit if the doctors think you're crazy

Honestly, charting will only show you that you are in fact ovulating, nothing more. I wouldn't bother with temping really, but this is a very unpopular response on many TTC boards. If you had been trying for like three months or something, then I would wholeheartedly suggest buckling down with temping. I kind of find the living and dying by temping a little off-putting.
With the length of time you have been trying combined with your age I would schedule with an RE. So many people regret wasting time with their OBGYN rather than moving to an RE. At 39, your window is closing fast enough that it's worth skipping the OBGYN here if you are prepared to do so.
That being said, if an RE is not in the financial or geographical cards for you or you just aren't ready to go down that path, by all means take up charting. It will show you if you are or are not ovulating and will give you a better idea if you are having anovulatory cycles in between ovulatory cycles or something similar.
Welcome and I second what discogranny says. Honestly, at your age you should already be at the RE. They normally say if you are over 35 and no luck after 6 months then it's worth going there, at least they can do basic tests and get the ball rolling. Good luck!
Welcome! I just wanted to echo what the other girls said. Considering its been >6 more and being over 35, I'd definitely call and get a sooner appt. Sometimes it takes a few cycles of tests (ie blood work, hsg, u/s) to find out what the issues are and how to proceed.
Welcome and sorry you are here. I second (third? forth?) calling the RE ASAP. I know it can take some time to get into mine, so sooner the better. Good luck!
Thanks again, everyone. I had time tonight, so I called my doctor & was able to get an appointment for Monday afternoon. I could've got in tomorrow, but I have a work training that I absolutely can't get out of.
I'll talk to her & ask for RE referrals. I'll do my own RE research too.
