Mostly a lurker here who is in need of some makeup help. I don't typically wear very much makeup, except for eyeliner and eye makeup because my skin is usually very dry. I am in a wedding next month and am looking to use my 15% off at Sephora to buy some additional products. The bride and some others are getting airbrushed makeup done that day, but I can't see spending that much.
My question to you is what should I buy? I am looking for something with long-lasting wear that will help even out my skin and stay matte all day. I am also open to suggestions on mascara and maybe a nice eyeshadow palette. (Maybe Stila or Too Faced? UD seems so expensive if I won't use all of them). If I can't get help here, I will throw myself at the mercy of the Sephora people, but I don't want it to come to that.
Here is the contents of my makeup bag that I typically use: Covergirl BB Cream (I pretty much hate it) Maybelline matte powder (It's ok) Bareminerals correcting concealer UD Eyeshadow Primer Potion Sephora eyeliner in black Sephora eyeshadows in glittering sand, firey redhead and the moonshadow trio in sunbaked no 2. Clinique high impact mascara in black Variety of brushes including Sephora Izak brush set (Powder Brush, Foundation Brush, Shadow Brush, Crease Brush and Eyeliner Brush) and concealer brush
I would start by getting a good primer. That will help your make-up last longer through the day. I'm a fan of the Smashbox primers, but I know many others here love the Hourglass Mineral Veil primer. I just ordered that one to try and see which I like better.
I love Lancome mascaras. My favorite right now is the Hypnose Star. I love love love the UD shadows, but agree they can get expensive if you won't use the whole palette. There are some sets smaller than the Naked palettes at Sephora that you might want to check out though. I haven't tried either Too Faced or Stila shadows, so hopefully someone else can chime in on those.
What kind of a look are you going for with eyeshadow? I love UD eyeshadow and think the naked palette is worth it. They have one that's just the basics. I like Naked (the first one) because you can do a lot of daily looks and it has colors for night too.
This is the foundation I use and I really like it.
I would start out by getting a good primer and foundation. Those are a lot harder to find in a drugstore brand. You could also get a blush and bronzer.
I like the UD Naked Palette but I don't know if I would go from no eye shadow to a $50 palette, especially if you doubt you will use all of the colors. People have been raving about the Wet & Wild palettes.
I'll ditto the Buxom mascara recommendation as it's my current favorite as well.
For a mattifying powder, my new obsession is the NARS Radiant Light Reflecting finishing powder. It doesn't sound like it should keep skin matte, but it really does.
You definitely need to get a foundation rather than a BB because you will want better coverage for photos. I just bought Revlon Photoready Foundation based on a bunch of blogger raves, but I haven't tried it on my face yet. It gives medium coverage.
You need a blush. If it's something you won't wear often, then I recommend NYX brand from Ulta. If you want to spend a bit of money on something you'll use again, check out the Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes. ETA: Since you have dry skin, you may want to consider a cream or liquid blush. For something from Sephora, I like Benefit Posietint (a bubblegum pink) and Benefit Cha Cha tint (coral). For something inexpensive, NYX cream blushes are supposed to be really great.
For eyeshadow, I adore Stila Romantic Eye and also Stila Naked Eye, but don't spend $36 on an eyeshadow palette if you don't think you'll use it again. If you'll use it, then get one of those because they are awesome. If you don't want to spend that much or don't think you'll use a nicer palette often, then look into Wet n Wild palettes. They are crazy cheap and actually really good quality. My favorite WnW eyeshadow is a trio called Walking on Eggshells. It is sooooo pretty. And it's $2.99!
I would use your current powder, eye primer, black eyeliner, and mascara. It looks like you also need a lipstick. For a wedding I recommend Revlon Lipstain + Balm because they are long lasting. It's like drawing on your lips with a marker that is on one end, and then you go over it with a clear balm on the other end. If it works with your coloring, I think the shade in Beloved would be really nice for a wedding.
I know I recommended a bunch of cheap drugstore stuff, but seriously don't go and buy new stuff from Sephora just to be in a wedding. There are lots of great drugstore products that will work very well for you for about 1/3 of what you would spend at Sephora.
Oh and for a wedding you must wear primer! The Tarte would work, and Hourglass gets good reviews too. The Tarte does photograph very well. I also mix it with moisturizer when I apply, versus using a foundation brush.
I bought hourglass with my 15% off but I got a smaller tube for under $20. I have not tried it yet.
I am going to second that walking on eggshells color in shadow....that looks soooo pretty!!! Too Faced makes a good eye shadow primer
But I love the idea of airbrushed MU for a wedding if it is around $75 or under I'd probably just get it done.
Yeah, I'm thinking she'll spend as much money buying makeup as just getting it done, especially if she's getting makeup at Sephora.
The eyelid color in the Walking on Eggshells trio is an exact dupe of Stila Kitten! I love it.

Thanks for all the posts! I think I am going to go with some of the nicer primer and foundation from sephora and maybe an eyeshadow pallet. I am going to try the mufe foundation and see what primer will work with it. I will pick up some of the drug store options, like the lip stain and balm that dawgs recommended. I am really going to make an effort to use what I buy for more than just events. Mornings are hectic with two toddlers (almost 3 and 1) but I need to start making more time for myself!
