OMG!!!! I am so sorry. Please tell me the bank will restore the money and that you won't be held liable for any of that. I have no clue how this works with debit cards or checking accounts.

Holy crap! I'm sorry. I would be kind of upset with my bank. I'm floored that they didn't pick up on something wrong until $53,000 went missing! We had someone hack one of our accounts once, and by the time they'd spent a couple hundred dollars our bank had locked out all cards connected to the account and contacted us. I hope you can get everything straightened out.
Correction: it was $63,000. And it seems like it was done with a card number neither of us have. What the ever loving fuck?!
What? That sounds like a serious bank error then, unless this person got a new debit card under your account?? And even that would be a pretty egregious bank error too.
OMG, I would be freaking. The bank will protect you from all of the fraudulent charges, but it still is a horrible experience.
This. I'm so sorry, Publius. That's terrible. I know I had a mini heart attack when I checked my credit card online one day to make sure a return had gone through, and found $10,000 worth of unauthorized charges. My bank credited all the money back within 2 business days.
That's the thing, I don't think they is catch it. They never called about it. We called them to find out why we didn't have access to that account two days ago. No one mentioned anything about this. They told us the card was blocked but said they didn't know why it had happened and couldn't explain it.
The branch manager who blocked the card called H last night. He returned the call this morning and she explained that someone had tried to make a withdrawal in her branch an she had denied it and blocked the card. She gave him another number to call and it's only now that we're learning WTF happened.
How do you not flag $63k being drained in two days from an account that hasn't had an ATM withdrawal in the US in six months?
This is what I want to know.

Yeah, sounds to me like they didn't catch it when they should have! These were all ATM withdrawals? Jesus! I think our daily limit is like $800 or something. How is it possible to pull out that much cash?!?

I only keep what we need to pay bills plus a bit extra in checking, but don't banks let people overdraft pretty easily anyway so they can take advantage of charging you 8 bazillion dollars in overdraft fees?

agreed. that's piss poor work on the bank's part.
a friend of mine had her wallet stolen a couple years ago and it was a damn nightmare, but the credit card company contacted her when the thief had charged up around $15K in less than 12 hours.
now in her case, the cc companies and her bank reversed all the charges so that wasn't an issue, but the thief had all of her ID info and since then thief has repeatedly tried to open new credit card accounts. my friend still monitors her credit constantly to make sure that the a-hole who stole from her doesn't open something new.
and as an aside, there was video surveillance of the thief in a few stores and a bank had a picture of the thief cashing a check at the bank and she's never been caught. the police said that they just didn't have the resources to follow up on this kind of case.

Is there no monitoring system on debit cards? With my credit card I regularly get phone calls to make sure it's me using the card if I go to two different pet stores in the same day. I can't imagine something like this being missed.

Yeah, I think the bank royally screwed up. Definitely take to the social media if they aren't responsive. I had a friend who had an issue with her bank and they were being slow to make it right who got resolution within a day after posting to Facebook.

I don't know about other banks, but ours monitors debit cards. I forgot to tell them that I was traveling out of the country once and got locked out of my account while in Europe. Whoops.

True, although a lot of it isn't even in-person purchases. When we have credit card fraud, people want to file a police report. I'm like, well, the IP address is in Ghana, so good luck with that.

My bank monitors debit cards. There was fradulent activity on my H's debit card a month or so ago, we got a call right away and a new card was issued.
I would be so mad, too! The above poster is correct, the bank has to eat the fraud. They actually would have to even if it wasn't within their control (well, as long as it was clear/proven that it was in fact fraud). Like here, a grocery store just screwed up and tens of thousands in fraud was perpetrated do to improper handling of debit card data. Any of the banks holding those debit cards have to eat it.
Also, $63,000 was made via ATM withdrawals? Is that right? How is that even possible? I'm pretty sure Commerce only lets me draw $700 cash on any given day. I could be wrong.
Regardless, I'm so pissed for you and hope it's all sorted out soon.

Umm, yeah. It's unacceptable that they didn't catch the fraudulent withdraws and charges. I'm shocked that you/your H discovered it first. They're insured, so you're money will be eventually be returned- but it seems to take forever (at least it seemed that way when all of our checking/savings were drained 6 years ago). Once all the money is returned, I would change banks/credit unions.
eta: feel free to rat the bank out here, so none of us bank with them.
