A little about me. I'm 28, expecting baby #1 with my BF (also 28), we have 2 dogs (9yo male beagle, 4 yo male pug). We are moving from a 3 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom apartment.
Currently both dogs have the reign of terror at home. When we go to work, they usually just lay around in the living room, but most of the time there are poop accidents from the pug. The beagle will pee in the house when he can't hold it anymore.
Moving into the apartment is going to cause some changes. BF and I plan on using large baby play yard gates to corral the dogs during the day to keep their accidents to a minimum when we are at work. They are totally going to flip out, aren't they? Has anyone ever changed up their dog's environment and allowances?
Am I doing the right thing? I don't want them to ruin the carpets in the new apartment...
Are the dogs crate trained? That might be something that can help ease the transition.
How long are they left alone now? Is it possible to have someone let them out midday, so that they don't have accidents any more?
We've recently moved from a 2800sq ft house to a 1br apt and the dog has adjusted really well. Our dog did have some seperation anxiety issues before the move, but it just took a little time to show her that this was our new home and she's been fine ever since. Also, when I leave I make sure to take her out right before I go and right after I get home. And I leave a bunch of activity and chew toys out for her too.

Do they only go in the apt during the day when your gone (as in they can't hold it that long) or do they go in the house often? If it's only while your gone, you probably should look into a dog walker. If its all the time, it sounds like you need to go back to potty training. In the meantime, can you gate them into the bedroom or bathroom, as they probably are not carpeted?
It sounds like the potting in the house is the issue, not the move to a smaller area with carpets. Carpet or not, I would not want my dog using my floors as a toilet.
Are you going to be sharing walls? Your neighbor's might get a little irritated. We had 3 dogs in a condo that shared walls and the upstairs neighbor complained more than once. We couldn't do anything to curb the barking while we were gone for the day. It was not a fun situation. Any time someone walked by it set off the barking. We had our neighbor stomping on her floor reminding us how much she hated the noise. She would call us when we were out at dinner to tell us the dogs were barking. Just remember that.....neighbor's don't like barking dogs.
