do you put foil on your cooktop stove? something along the lines of this?
h (who learned it from his mom), likes this, because it's "easier to clean"..but i think it's super super ugly. i can't stand it. i have a beautiful gas cooktop right now..and when i went downstairs this morning, i saw MIL wrapping up my stove with foil...
i think she got the "okay" from h, because when i texted him, he said "i thought you said it was okay if i wanted to do it".......
i told him it was okay because i didn't think he'd ever get around to it.....not have his mom do it for us! i really don't want it done..i think it looks super ugly, and makes it look super cheap and disposable.
WDYT?
and a side note....what do you call it? i have heard cooktop, stove, range....
I've seen it done, and I guess I'd agree that it would be easier to clean. But I really don't have a problem soaking and cleaning them by hand, and I also like the look better without the foil.
If it were my MIL, I'd try to explain that I prefer the "naked" look, and I am ok cleaning by hand and start unwrapping. It is pretty common for me to disagree with my ILs though. The two different cultures sometimes have clashing ideas about things (if thy had it their way, like it is back in their village, they would have us move into their home so they can help us raise the baby).
I'm with you, I have a nice gas stove and would rather clean it than have foil on it. Can you just put foil on it when you know you have a messy cooking project and promptly remove?
I don't think it's ugly, but we use barkeeper's best friend to clean and it's not that hard. I would clean/toss the stove more often if we had drip pans

I blame all wring words on Swype
Yep, Barkeeper's Friend or Bon Ami work great for cleaning drip pans. That's actually what we do now, since our house has an old stove with odd drip pans for which I can't find replacements. In the past, I would scrub drip pans, but once they got to the point of no return, I'd replace.
Go gas ranges have drip pans? I feel like I havent' seen that. But, they are pretty easy to clean.
i did at my old house..i've never seen it before and was actually surprised something came out from other. but i had a glasstop electric at my mom's house. (and a coil electric before then, lined with foil)l.
We have drip pans and ours is gas. They're a little odd in that they go depth-wise and are just one for both front and back burner combined. I think my mom might have lined them sometimes. I typically don't. And...my sugar sauce for my baklava overflowed the pot and into the drip pan so that was fun to soak and clean
I tend to call them stoves because that's what my mom called them. I only think of cooktops when they're the separate kind embedded in the counter with the oven elsewhere (but I still usually call it a stove). In my family, we use range less frequently but it usually means the entire unit (top and oven) is one piece.
In the past when I cleaned houses and had to deal with gas stoves usually I just used a good cleaner to spray and let it sit for a minute of two. In desperate times I use a little baking soda and vinegar.

me too! but when we were buying our house, and they had little check boxes on what came with what..i learned that it's actually called a "cooktop oven" (mine is on the counter). i normally would've called it a stove..whether or not it was attached to the oven (baking device for turkeys and such)..and when they were attached, together, the unit is called a range. at least that's what i called it. the definition for microwave is techincially an oven, also...a "microwave oven". and that was all annoying when i was buying my house =P
how do you guys "soak and scrub" if there is no drip pan?
We have a gas stove, no drip pans. I take a wet cloth (either hot water or vinegar), smear it around and let it soak in a little, then wipe it up a few minutes later.
