I applied for a Macy's card and was declined. I then went and looked up my credit score and it is 766 which is excellent. I did have one in the past and may have not closed it. Would that cause me to be declined? I have always had excellent credit and haven't applied for a card in over a year.
My guess their system is jacked. Once we where denied for a Lowe's cc card. They denied us at the counter. We have excellent credit and never get denied. We paid cash instead. About a week later we get the cc in the mail with like 5,000 or so available credit. Weirdness....
I used to work at Macy's. When the associate puts your information in the system, if it sees that you have a card it will tell them and then they can try to re-activate that old card.
I had a customer turned down and she also knew her credit rating was very high and she had almost no debt. I called credit to ask them if they could look at her application for anything odd. They had me put her on the phone. Her house payment was $1300 but she had typed 13000 a month. They fixed that and were able to issue her card. So it could be something that simple.
I was denied for an Ann Taylor Loft card. I have great credit and a high household income. The letter was very vague. Whatever. I definitely shop there much less but I also haven't cared for the clothes in a while.
I think the letter you will get will also be vague, with new credit laws they are restricted as to what they can say. There should be a phone number on it I would call them to talk about it. It could be something very simple that they can fix. If there isn't a number I'd get Macy's credit number from their website and call.
I was denied for a Victoria Secret card about two years ago. The reason was that I wasn't a good fit for their program. I don't know what that even means. My credit score was also in the 760's at the time with no other store cards.
I was once told my a friend that worked there that if you hadn't lived at your address 2 years you would be denied.
