I'm assuming you are talking about a small half bath right off of the living area. My old house had one off of the foyer, but really close to the open kitchen/living/dining area. A foul smell in there could definitely waft out to the rest of the living space, so if anyone else was home and in the living area, we typically went upstairs to do anything other than pee.

Once I did have to ask my H not to go poop in our shower bathroom. He did it 2 days in a row, right before I had to shower. I think that's our only rule.
My H and I poop in either bathroom but one bathroom is connected to the office. If one of us is working in the office, we usually make sure to use the bedroom bathroom to avoid smelly seepage. If on person is in the bedroom and one person is in the office, it's a free for all. It's not a said "rule" - just something we've started doing without ever talking about it.

Our half bath is off the kitchen. It is an unsavory place to poop and is therefore only used for that purpose in case of an emergency. (Emergency constitutes someone using the other bathroom for showering, getting ready, or also pooping. We only have a bath and a half.)
We're poor losers with only one bathroom that is right in the middle of everything. Actually, this has been the arrangement in every place we have lived.

Maybe powder room is a regional thing. IDK. It's not like I'm walking around like "The maid missed a spot in the powder room." But yeah, it's a half bathroom close to living spaces.

We have a powder room ( I understand it to be a toilet and sink aka half bath) and a water closet (toilet only off the master bath) plus another Full bath. I poop in the wc, dh in the pw and the kids in their bathroom. None are off limits

I wonder what it's like to have 2 bathrooms.
Same here.
But my grandparents had a half bath that was right at the living room/dining room and right by the kitchen. So I get what you're asking. I think it is more a courtesy thing than a rule.
Oh. Yeah, I would totally poop in the bathroom farthest from people as possible. Actually, we have 2 full bathrooms and I still go to mine to poop because it's farther from the living room.

I keep a basket with an extra roll of tp and three of the small bath & body works sprays in our powder room. I hate being at someone's house, having business to tend to, and no spray to cover it up.
Growing up, our half bath was off the kitchen and family rule was take it upstairs.
Our house, it's down a hall off the mudroom, so nbd.
May I ask what prompted you to pose this question? Did someone drop an ugly in your powder room today during the party? lol.
Ha. No, no party. I don't care what guests do.
My husband and I have differing opinions on the subject. Ours doesn't have a fan and is between the family room and kitchen. If you drop a deuce there, the smell lingers forever. I think its nasty to poop there and then have to sit through dinner smelling shit, but he's all "toilets are for poop!"

My H prefers to take his dumps exclusively in the upstairs toilet. Up until this post, I thought it was just a wacky H thing.
I poop where I fucking please! Upstairs OR dowsstairs, even in the powder room! I'm a barbarian! Maybe I will dig a hole in the yard and crap there next time!
