Has anyone done a "custom" build with Ryland? DH and I looked at a model today and they are working on the lot plan right now. We loved the model and think the various upgrade options would be great to have.
I would love to hear experiences with the build process, how the change process was if you changed your mind about something, quality of the finishes home, etc.
I have a ryland home but I'm not sure it's custom as you mean it. We picked the model and the lot to build on and chose all the options from the design center. If you're interested in that process I can share our experience.
We built with a custom division of a production builder, but it was different than building with the builder in one of their subdivisions (we built on our own lot) -- we had more options and choices available, but the financing aspect is similar. Are you building on a Ryland lot or on one of your own? They a quite different experiences because while we were able to go customize everything with our build (and I don't mean select granite at a design center, but choose a completely different material than normal and pick out your specific slabs at a stone yard), they weren't well versed in doing so, do there were a lot of errors. However, we avoided the financing difficulties that can accompany traditional custom builds.
