I put 2 flower nails and 5 tips in the sink with hot water, dawn soap, and some dishwasher powder.
I left it there for 2 days (these were just some items that needed a good long soak...then I forgot about them. Not every day dishes/really gross stuff).
So I'm doing the dishes and I pull them out...the finish on them turned to that copperish/yellowish color and black wiped off of them onto my sponge.
I am assuming I just ruined them? I need to buy more right? Unless I take a towel and make sure all the black comes off and re-wash them. It'd just be easier to buy new ones, but these ARE new ones, I just bought them.
I made sure not to put them in with other metals because I ruined my Mother's cheesecake pan by leaving it to soak with a meat thermometer, the metals reacted and ate away at the cheesecake pan over night.
My stainless steel sink has black marks on it that won't rub off. I am assuming that the stainless steel sink reacted with the Wilton tips/flower nail and did pretty much what the thermometer did to my pan.
I ruin so many metal things... Being on my own, without a dishwasher, is hard work. I need a guide that says, "STOP! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUT THESE TWO METALS TOGETHER!!!"
I've tried cleaning these kinds of marks with vinegar and that takes it out. I also read lemon juice and baking soda will help take it out
ftr, I am reeeally bad about over soaking stuff like this. Cookie sheets and muffin pans don't stand a chance in my house
I can handle the discoloration, as long as I can get that black junk off so it doesn't come off on the frosting. I just need to make sure I get it all, really well.
I feel like my sinks are the pit of hell when it comes to metal stuff. Metal goes in but there is a 50/50 chance it won't come back the right way.
For future reference, I find that an immediate scrub while the pot/pan is still hot is much more effective than soaking metals. Every time I soak a metal it oxidizes in some way.
I don't know what to do about your current stuff. Sorry.
Is it just tarnish? I've definitely tarnished and I just clean them off well and move on. Also, instead of soaking in the sink, use a small glass or plastic container next time And vinegar - that's what I was taught to cut the grease.
Yes! Tarnish, really badly. I was trying to think of the right name for it but the most I could come up with was describing the color.
