I did it because I have an autoimmune disease and there is some new research that it could possibly help. It was a gift from my Dad too. I work in insurance and think of it the same way-You don't want to have to use it, but you want it to be there just in case. I used CBR and if you want to use me a reference you get a discount. Send me a message if you're interested!
We did with Payne. We had the money lying around so it was NBD. I wish I'd known at the time, though, that it was more likely to help a sibling than help him.
With dd we donated it. We didn't want to spend the money again, but didn't want to waste it either.
Nope. The liklihood of your child's own cord blood being able to help them is extremely low. We will probably donate it.
if youre thinking about it, you might want to get on it. lol! i was shockecd at how involved the process was. paperwork for you and your doctor/midwife, an extra bloodtest, etc etc.
No kidding. I felt like I was donating a kidney or something. Lol.
We did bc DH insisted, mostly for the "it sounds cool" factor. I would have preferred to donate it but we didn't fit the demographic the agency wanted. Personally, I think it's a waste of money but whatever.
We did not. Our doc (who was pg herself at the time) said that the chances were extremely low that it would be usable, and the cost would have been crazy for 2. I would have liked to donate but couldn't at our hospital.
Well since my kid is super special (i.e., diseased) hers was used for a study evaluating genetic structural disorders. I was glad about that. I would have donated it otherwise.
we won't. i want to delay cord clamping, and i don't think you can do both.
Have you talked to your OB about this? I am interested in doing it too and the internet has varying stories of how open to delayed cord clamping hospitals and doctors are.
We're big advocates of donating. It can be used for so many things. It is cost prohibitive for us to bank it.
My dad actually had a double cord blood transplant in August 2011 after battling leukemia for the 2nd time. Sadly, the transplant did not save him but they can save a lot of leukemia patients. That's reason #1 why I'm such a big advocate of donating.
we donated. the kinds of things for which it can be used/is being tested for future use aren't the kinds of things that run in our families, so we didn't have a special reason to keep it for ourselves.

We banked DS's in 2005. My doctor recommended it and we had the money available. I'm glad I did because I developed an autoimmune disease and DS is an only child (we planned on having 2). So I'm glad it's there in case we need it. It's about $95/year with SecuraCell.

Omg I forgot you are in Ashburn aren't you? My doctor was OK with it (Loudoun ObGyn, Dr Park delivered and was amazing). The Lansdowne Birthing Inn was great too but everything was so exciting when DS came out, neither of us remembered if they ACTUALLY delayed the clamp. But they definitely SAID they were OK with it lol.

oh you liked the birthing inn?? this is encouraging. did you get in the tub? did you choose an OB over a midwife? i don't know why i'm asking so many questions since i'm 18 seconds pregnant lol.
No it is good to ask these questions early because if you hear bad things you want to find a new ob early. The ER at loudoun pissed me off but I have had a friend deliver at the hospital and liked it but she had a planned c section that turned into an emergency c section when her water broke the night before. I messaged you too but I am delivering ungodly far away due to a deep love of my ob.

Yes, tub worked pretty well until I was 7 cm then it didn't help very much. I did have an OB but also had a doula who was a.ma.zing. She is training to be a midwife, I'll PM you her info tomorrow (I'm up feeding henry at the moment). My OBs office is very supportive of natural birth etc. They have 5-6 doctors and I liked all but 1. I'll PM you that info too. They delivered my nephew as well and SIL had the same impressions I did.
