Well, your post title says you don't know what to do, and you say the same thing in your actual post. As a school counselor this really shouldn't even be a question. You continue to make me scratch my head and wonder how in the world you managed to become a counselor.
I should have worded the title differently. I am a school counselor and do my job very well. So you can stop scratching your head.
I will continue to scratch my head. You seem to lack common sense and that is terrifying given your profession.
Also, you have been told at least twice that your grammar is atrocious, yet you still haven't changed anything. You seem to be incredibly dense and obtuse.

Say nothing. It's not the right time and could harm the child. All you can do is give the general speech about your office being a safe and confidential place if he wants to talk which is the option you offer to all the kids.
I did not tell anyone anything. I worded it completely wrong. I wanted to know if anyone had any similar stories. I was wrong!!
But why do you want to see if anyone has any similar stories? What difference does it make? You just don't say anything and just because a student says something to you, it doesn't mean its true (like maybe the student trusts other people than just you).
This is where I'm at.
I don't understand how this is share-worthy. A student told you something in confidence and asked you not to repeat it. How is that different from every other day in the life of a counselor? You started out by stating that you didn't know what to do, and then backtracked to looking for someone to relate to... which doesn't really make much sense at all in this fairly common counselor situation.

I'm sorry, but this is so hard to just ignore. You keep getting the SAME criticisms and and advice about your grammar, word usage, and the concerning lack of common sense given your position. Nothing changes.
as much as i try, i can never freaking remember the backstory on this one. and i'm pretty sure i've asked before. WHY CAN'T I REMEMBER?
Daisy: -Post is hard to follow because it never makes sense, sentence structure is iffy at best, and bad grammar and incorrect word usage are rampant.-
Us: What are you trying to say? That word doesn't mean what you think it means. Are you drunk?
Daisy: So sorry! I'm just bad at the entire English language and also anything that requires common sense. I'll try harder like I do when I'm at my job as a school counselor that I got after I earned two masters degrees.

this is very helpful. you should do more summaries.
Except I had to edit my original because *I* wasn't paying attention and my first sentence didnt make sense lol!
goaskalice, is your SN taken from the book? If so, that book still haunts me.
ETA: Sorry, this doesn't really go here, but I thought that the post might be devolving since the OP is gone.
No, it's actually from one of my favorite songs, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, which apparently is where the book got it's title. I totally forgot about that book until you mentioned it! But, heck yes that story was heavy.

Dammit there's an actual school counselor question and I miss it before she deactivates?
Daisy if you're lurking, and I'm sure you are, I believe your heart is in the right place by wanting to let the student know she can talk to you about this. As everyone else said, though, she would likely feel completely violated that now two people have read a note that wasn't intended for them. Check in with her when you ordinarily would, and toss in a "how's everything else going?" toward the end of the conversation. If she needs to talk to you, that's the opening. Have resources ready just in case. I've yet to have a kid NOT spill her guts about something I already know (but she doesn't know I know) once I ask that very simple question. And if she doesn't, that's okay too, but you've preserved the relationship.
For what it's worth, if one of our teachers found a note like that, they would give it to the counselors, too. Even if we don't address it directly with the kid, it's still not a bad thing to know backstory in case she starts exhibiting any signs of depression or social problems.

I figured it was from the song, but I will say that I read that damned book in junior high and every time I see alice post I think of it.
