I love it. at that age, I wore a gypsy costume I found in our house when we moved in every day after school (we had uniforms or it would made appearances there, too) and at every other opportunity until my mom burned it out of pure frustration.
I am interested in this homeschool set up. So, do you teach them at home, or do they go somewhere with other homeschooled kids w/ a lot of parental involvement?
It's a charter school, so it is in the public school system. The school provides all curriculum to the parents, along with lesson plans. Parents can choose to use the provided curriculum, or substitute another curriculum of their choosing as long as it meets school standards. I personally use the provided curriculum for all of the core subjects and use supplemental curriculum for things like art, history, etc. I also supplement with additional math and spelling curriculum. We do take state tests and do AR tests and all of those things, too.
The students can do 100 percent school at home, or they can come to the academy for workshops, etc. There are writing, science, art, history, etc. workshops each week. The teachers are available for tutoring or extra help every day. There are tons of hands-on projects that they do at the academy. Each month is themed and there is some kind of big project they work on all month. For instance, January was all about Medieval times, so the workshops all revolved around Medieval history and it culminated in a Medieval Fair at the end of the month. This month is all about the solar system. My kids go each Wednesday all day (8:30 - 1:45) and usually attend field trips once a month, all art workshops, and all parties (holidays and such). They are home the rest of the time.
It's nice because they can also use all of the amenities of the public school system, clubs, sports, and school libraries in the school system. The band and orchestra normally only takes kids starting in 5th grade (I think) but they will take the kids in our school starting in kindergarten.
I have been really happy with the choice to move to our current school.

No problem! I had always entertained the notion of homeschooling but didn't feel like I was really prepared for it, so we started Cambria out in public school. We all HATED it. The school system here sucks big time, it was just bad all around for her and it was sucking the fun out of learning. This hybrid-type school is the perfect fit for us. Keep exploring your options, there are a lot of them now.
she is doing better today. The steroids seem to be helping with her coughing/breathing. She is super cranky and doesn't have much of an appetite but she did get more sleep last night than the night before. Thanks for asking!

That's great. O finished his steroids today & the coughing/breathing issues are basically gone. He was a little raspy by bedtime but the temp went from 80-40 in half a day so I'll blame that. His attitude sucks, but I think that's the age.

I hope she keeps getting better!
I'm glad he's better! LOL yeah, it's hard to tell with the attitude thing at this age.
dude, after our last conversation about your setup, i called our board of ed. and BEGGED to do something like this and they blew me off. i'm so bummed. TN schools are unreal. i've recently read that 76% of 8th graders can't read at grade level and only 15% are prepared for college when they graduate. i think the common core stuff could really help but everybody's all, "SOCIALISM!! OBAMA!! DON'T TREAD ON ME!!" about it. anyway, if this business about arming teachers passes then i'll be back up in your business when we start homeschooling.
Ugh, lame I'm sorry there isn't anything like that around you. I have friends who homeschool on their own and are members of homeschool co-ops that they really like. Our public schools are a complete joke around here and our private schools aren't any better. Get all up in my business! I don't mind!
At that age, I wore what I called my "wedding dress." It was a white lace dress with a pink sash. I wore it all.the.time. Hot, cold, outside in the dirt, inside, etc. Oh yeah, and besides the dress I was a total tomboy, lol.
