my friend didn't like how her husband pronounced his last name, so she offered him a bargain. if she took his last name, she had to pronounce it her way. he took the deal, so now they're the only branch in his family tree that emphasizes the middle syllable.
DH has a French last name, his whole family pronounced it wrong for who knows how many generations. When DH was in high school, a French teacher told him how it should be pronounced so DH started pronouncing it correctly. Now the whole family pronounces it correctly, including his 90 year old to his grandparents except for one cousin who says DH is a snob, but she took her husbands last name. I'm glad DH did that, it's prettier this way.

This is interesting to me how do his parents feel about that? Was it hard for him to start saying it differently after 30 years or so of saying it the original way?
no idea how his parents feel about it. clearly that wasn't an issue for him or for her in making the switch. he said it was easier than he'd expected.
My maiden name is pretty German. When my parents moved to SC they started pronouncing it differently to make it easier on people. We're the only branch of the family to say it that way.

When my dad turned 50 he decided to start pronouncing his last name differently. My brother split off to a different pronunciation too. It's like they have their own weird sect of the family now.
My XH's family had some extended family that pronounced their last name different from everyone else. It was so bizarre, like no one really knew who was right. lol

This is funny, because FI says his last name differently from his parents. Not drastically, but he pronounces one vowel a little less "tossed off" than they do. It actually really bugs him, lol. Like, "Why do my parents SAY it like that??" haha.

H's last name is Norwegian. His family pronounces it in a very American way, but when I'm not around his family then I pronounce it like I think it's supposed to be.

This was our family growing up, French last name. My brother and sister say it wrong and my parents never corrected them.
I was convinced that DH's family said their last name wrong the entire time we were dating. The name is German. When I took his last name and a German coworker pronounced it the way I thought was wrong I had to apologize to DH. And I hate admitting I'm wrong.
H and I say ours differently. His last name is hispanic; I say it the way his family says it. He says it the "white" way and pronounces the 't' as a 'd'.
Oh and my last name is greek, and I pronounce it differently depending which language I am speaking. As a result, DH heard me pronouncing my (maiden) last name with a french accent the other day and has been going around saying it loudly and stupidly and thinking it is the funniest thing ever.
