Anyone have a clue about installing a basement bathroom? pthe plumber came today, and for the sink plus time and materials it will be about 400$. We are going to do it.
Now the question is where to put it.
We have plans to finish a legal bedroom and family room in about half the basement. Maybe in a year. The other half will be a shop and a large empty room (storage for now, could be something else down the line).
Eventually, if we stay in the house forever (which is a huge question mark, we moved here for a job and aren't tied to the area in any way) we might put a bathroom in the basement. The house has 2.5 baths, the only reason to add one would be if we were expecting an aging parent to move in or something.
So we are wondering if we should rough in a bathroom while we are tying in to water and plumbing lines anyway. Does anyone have wisdom or input? And someone remind me what a whole bathroom might cost if we do a basic prefab shower stall, basic vanity, linoleum floor, nothing fancy. Tia!
If you have any future plans you should always, imo, at least rough in the work for finishing later. It's cheaper to do it while everything is open and accessible (or being built) than having someone come back later and have to rework what is being done now. (It's always nice too - and a good selling point - to have a bathroom or a rough-in in the basement for future family rooms, bedrooms, mancaves, whatever so you don't have to trek upstairs when you're using a room downstairs.)

That is what we are thinking. Better to do it now when the plumber is here anyway. DH is supposed to be organizing it and working at home for a day while the plumber is here, so I hope he schedules it ASAP.
Also, our plumber is hot. If I was single I would be all over that. It may possibly have slightly influenced my hiring decision.
So you have an existing concrete floor now? Or you're basement is being built right now and your concrete isn't poured yet? If concrete isn't poured yes I'd add it because it isn't much cost but if you already have an existing basement...which I think you do then no I would not. Unless you are on the low end of your market and you actually finish off that bathroom you won't be seeing that cost back if you decide to sell. It is a huge cost to tear up concrete and if you just leave it as stub ups for a bathroom you won't really be adding any value to the house.
Here's some links to see what is all involved with adding a bathroom to an existing basement from a former D&Rer along with some budget info:
**With a utility sink your sink is high enough that they probably aren't going to be tearing up much concrete to add a drain line. They will just run hot and cold water along the wall, drain high from right under the sink and run it along a wall until it gets right next to the line under your house, and then they will have a vent that will need to go up and connect into an existing vent some place near your bathrooms or kitchen upstairs. That would give them minimal concrete work saving you a lot of money but limiting what can be placed there in the future. You should locate the utility sink as close to the underslab drain as possible to keep your options open in the basement.
Work on a floor plan and maybe post it here. See where the plumber suggests putting it but keep in mind they will just look for minimal work not necessarily your big picture goals for the space.
