I haven't had a yard in years. I'm a freaking plant addict.
I"m trying to place an online order for a seed/plant company before a 50% off coupon expires today. I keep putting way too many things in my cart. I need to actually build my structures and get all of the soil prepped and in order before I can put anything in the ground. And it's a massive amount of work.
And I have zero help from dh on our yard or even w/ watching kiddo b/c we currently have 4-5 other houses in various states of renovation to get rented ASAP. So......
tell me to step away from the plants.
I just love plants so much. And veggies. And herbs.
So does my kid, she's not a great influence on me b/c she gets such joy from them as well. We just watered a bunch of seeds today that she planted with me this week. She loves to sniff herb plants. Basically, she's a mini-me when it comes to plants and it makes my heart soar.
I need to remind myself... whatever I buy means work. Not just fun. And I have less time than ever to myself. (she'll help, but mainly it's that special kind of 1.5 year old help that makes everything take a lot longer.)
Good luck!!! I love that your DD loves them too, that is really cute. Plants are way too much work for me. I have always wondered what people see in them. I mean, I think they are pretty, but I can't bring myself to dig in the dirt, and then have to tend to them all summer long. We have the plants that came with our house, and those are a royal pain in my ass.
I have a plant problem too. It's second only to my fabric problem.
Imma back out of this post before I start recommending more things for you to order and asking you for your recommendations.
Good. You do that.
I circle plants in catalogs and make lists like a kid at Christmas. This is ridiculous! And then one of the catalogs has some "pro-planned" gardens for diff themes where you get like 25 plants for $40, then 50% off. Still a lot, but might be cheaper than me over doing it and then realizing I didn't have some I wanted. Or do i want to create my own, using their pattern and ideas? Some had a lot of plants I was already thinking.
Then I'm like, Ooooh, I could put a rhubarb in the corner of the front garden. I'm putting thyme along the rocks on one side of our fence line as I hate seeing rocks/ having random rock areas. I could go on and on and on. And our yard isn't that big. And we may only be here a few years. I'm hoping to do a raised veg bed, but will intersperse some things into the regular garden.
I hope I don't kill them all!
I'm also looking for a source of free/cheap rain barrels. Seems like I've heard of some grants for our area since we're in an urban setting, but I have to track those down. I also need to get the lead soil test going.
Really, I shouldn't even look at plants for awhile, but my coupon expires and we're nearly past frost date! WOooo hooo!
And yes, I think I'm limiting myself to perennials, veggies, and herbs.
I may have to throw in a few annuals when I'm done, but I mainly want perennials. Lower maintenance? lol somewhat.
I wish I could pay someone to prep all our ground where I want it prepped. We bought a foreclosed home and the yard hasn't been touched in years. I need to till all the soil, i think. I should have done it after all our rain. I just looked at it again today, and now it's all dry and cracked in the areas where I need to dig. Grr. I'm not really getting a 2nd tri energy boost yet either, which blows. I would rent stuff and do it soon, but I really only have her nap time to focus on it since dh is off working on the other places. I just (stupidly?) asked today if I could help him tomorrow w/ anything at the one we're just finishing up and he mentioned working on the garden there.... haha. I don't want to do that one! I want to do my own! (though I do have the mental plan for there, and I'm prob going to steal a few perennials popping up there.
I just don't want to dig/till/create the beds. I want to just plant and grow.
I really think we need some dirt brought in, but I haven't done it yet and am feeling kind of cheapo about it since we're spending on the reno houses. I did get free woodchips from the tree we just chopped down. I planned to get the ones from the trees in the other yard that we're removing, but i think we're going to end up using them there. Boo.
We won't do much to the other property yards, but this is a bigger yard, bigger house, and might be our future house in a few years.
Haha, I'm the same way. I get to the nursery and I'm all "zomggg, must buy all the tomatoes!". And that's how I ended up with, like, 10 cantaloupe plants this year.
I am a garden nut. I love that my birthday and Mother's Day are both in the first two weeks that it's warm enough to safy plant here. It gives family members easy gift certificate ideas, and I can rationalize my nursery-buying excess.
Today I prepped and weeded...next week I spend, spend, spend. I'm a little excited some perennials didn't survive the winter so now I can buy new ones!
I worked at a garden centre summers during university and it was my fav job ever. I still want to jump and skip and twirl and frolic through the aisles.
I love plants, too In the first 3 years after we bought our house, we generally had 20 or more plants lined up at all times, waiting to be planted. It's so, so much work, but I love gardening
I'm in a similar predicament. I bought a house with no foundation beds, no plants and only a few sad trees. So I've been harvesting in my moms yard everytime I visit, I have a ton of plants in pots I'm waiting to get in the ground. I created beds with newspaper and mulch, I'm waiting for them to be ready to plant in, it will probably be fall before they are really ready! Ack! I might die before then. So I'm not looking at garden catalogs or websites at all. And I'm trying to avoid the distressed palnt racks at the big boxes, but it's haaaaarrrrd to pass them by. The little guys neeeeeeeed me to rescue them!
I've been getting plant's from my mom and dad's yard too, ea trip home, and whenever they come out here. They still had snow when I was back there a few weeks ago, so we haven't grabbed a ton yet, but each car load has some.
I"m trying to get out there this coming weekend and should hopefully load up then, too. My mom said she has a redbud tree potted up for me as well. Small, but a start.
My mom is like crazy awesome grower.
I can hold my own, but I also kill plants a lot. I figure, it happens. As long as I had joy in the process!
Me too. This year I'm going to attempt an outdoor herb garden (I'd been doing container gardening on our back patio, but my darling cats kept thinking it was a litter box, so I'm over that). Only problem is our backyard floods terribly during summer storms thanks to the drainage from the neighborhood behind us, so I'm stumped over where I can safely plant them. H says anything visible from the front yard would be tacky. Still, this hasn't stopped me from buying several pots from the plant nursery.
I'm no help! I love flowers and color. Veggies for some reason not so much. We moved my garden this year so we will see. I'm going to our local flea market tomorrow and having dh build me some window boxes!
Haha, I'm the same way. I get to the nursery and I'm all "zomggg, must buy all the tomatoes!". And that's how I ended up with, like, 10 cantaloupe plants this year.
That's what I'm trying NOT to do.
I'm not sure that I'm being successful.
I should just buy plants. But if I buy seeds from this place, I can get some super neat veggie varieties. Yet, I'm better at planting pre-started plants. And if I buy seeds, I'll have a bazillion, won't I? They're cheaper, though, and I can get nice variety.
MUST. EMPTY. VIRTUAL. CART. and start over. haha.
I'm like... OH! Soybeans! Hungarian Yellow Wax beans! (I LOVE THOSE AND neVER find them in plant form)
