Have you heard of companies that would play vinyl records for the reception? We'd really like to do something a little different and I think having turntables would be fun.
Any other non-traditional suggestions? We are not having a formal dance and I hate DJs.

Somewhat off subject, but your post reminded of the wedding I attended last week. One of the prerecorded songs played as the guests were arriving was "Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. I like the song, but really? During the wedding warmup?
We had a DJ and he used turntables... We went with a guy who doesn't only do weddings and were quite happy with him. What kind of music are you looking for?
A DJ that doesn't talk I guess? And indie/folk sort of music.
Our DJ used a computer, but she didn't talk. There were two companies in our area that specialized in being non-talking DJs. That was a huge deal to us because DJs in the NY area can tend to be straight out of Jersey Shore, and we wanted to avoid that.
