I check all of the major sites (priceline, kayak, travelocity and expedia) and set up price alerts. Before I purchase I will also check the airlines site directly to see if they have cheaper flights (which they sometimes do).
For international travel, usually a month ahead is when the price is the best.
OK. Related question- should I wait a few months to book flights and hotels? What is a good timeframe for when to book a trip?
It depends on if you are going during high season or not. Google says that Hawaii in the summer is its off season and winter is high season. So if you are planning on going during the winter (probably especially if you are going around Christmas), it is best to book a couple of months ahead of time (at least).
Thanks! I haven't booked a trip that requires flights & hotels before, so I'm weirdly nervous about it.
When I booked DH's last minute trip to NYC, it was cheaper to book them separately. So before you book, definitely check the price for the two separately.
I'm oddly obsessive when it comes to booking tickets and hotels though, so keep that in mind.
