Ds2 is high functioning ASD. He is going with Dh to England while I stay home with the other kids They are connecting thru DC. DH has a meeting in dc that starts the next day.
would you let a 6 yr old do a direct flight 1.5 hours as an unaccompanied minor? He is a good traveler. Sd used to fly to London unaccompanied at his age
Probably not my kid at age 6. YMMV, but my DS wasn't even dx'd at 6. While he had a good bit of travel under his belt, his impulsivity and anxiety would have made it too much for airline personnel if there were any glitches.
I once attempted to fly to Paris on a flight that got cancelled after it pulled from the gate at JFK- inside monitors showed it as departed. Parents had left. We waited on the ground for over 5 hours before returning to the terminal. The flight was full of unaccompanied minors- school had just let out and kids were flying to see grandparents and non-custodial parents. All of the kids- about 20+- were under the care of one flight attendant who was overwhelmed.
This experience is why DS never flew alone until he was able to be independent IRL.
