This is rich :
yes they should be drug tested. if they have enough money to pay for drugs they can pay for food. if we have to as working citizens who are ultimately paying for them, so should they....there are families out there who truly need food stamps and i don't look down on them at all.... i will even go a step further...which i have no idea how you can regulate this. but DH works for the government at a warehouse (mail out pharmacy..not that exciting). he is a supervisor, but they have a lot of employees that are on food stamps because we have a neighboring city or two that have a lot of low income families. well they all brag about how they have food stamps, yet they drive BMWs, have coach purses, designer jeans etc. since they don't pay for food they buy these types of items. they also sell their food stamps...

I was about to say, it's like Bump Bingo -- welfare, Coach purses, drug testing for jobs ...
I don't understand how it is that everyone on the bump is exposed to massive, rampant, and blatant abuse of social safety nets and yet none of them ever report the fraud. It's baffling.
This. I would love for someone to just go ahead and ask them this.
Why are the bumpies so vapid?
eta: against my better judgment, I read some more HTTs...many think torture is okay as well. So, yeah.

She has completely misplaced her outrage. She should be picketing her school district for letting her get past the 4th grade without being able to construct a coherent sentence.

according to one poster, it's because it was only implemented in FL. If it was nationwide, we'd save more than we spend.
I get hung up on the financial aspect before I even get to the I have to get drug tested for my job debate. It costs more money than it saves.
Amen. Anyone who claims to be motivated by financial conservatism on this issue is either lying or woefully uneducated.
Just admit it -- your intentions are punitive. You want the small percentage of recreational drug users who receive benefits to be punished, and you don't mind the majority who DON'T to deal with the additional hurdles and humiliation to receive their benefits when they've done nothing wrong. And you don't mind to spend $10 to recoup $1, because you're pissed off about the nerve of these entitled tokers, right? (numbers pulled from my ass).
But don't talk to me about waste, or you're smoking yourself. Which you should be... you need to chill the fuck out. Puff puff, unclench.
Also, while we are momentarily revisiting the welfare queen myth, has anyone read anything or have any thoughts about a similar myth re: disability? I feel like it's socially acceptable and agreed upon by the masses that mental illness, developmental disorders, learning disabilities et al are grossly overdiagnosed. Everyone just tosses this about without evidence. Like the casual "everyone has ADD or autism now" mentality. Of course this carries over into disability benefits. Now, it is true that as states have been incentived to reduce their welfare rolls, their disability rolls have increased in nearly equal measure. And some people have taken that as some kind of proof that fakey mcfakersons are claiming inability to work for bullshit reasons. If someone was getting welfare, and had a mental disability, what did it matter to them whether it was "disability benefits" or general assistance? Money is money. So now a social worker is transitioning them to a more appropriate type of benefit. What does that prove?
Might there be a few people who hide behind a disability dx when they could actually support themselves? Might there be a few unsympathetic welfare recipients? Of course. But I feel like people greatly overestimate the percentage of these people, and that it goes hand in hand with the assumptions about school aged children who fake dx for a few more precious minutes on a test. In my dealings with special school district, it's not so simple to obtain an educational diagnosis. It's not like you walk in with a doctor's note and get whatever you want. My 5 year old may be diagnosed, but his new school will be reevaluating him this year and decide whether he has an educational diagnosis, regardless of what the doctor thinks.

I'm supposed to take a shot when every stereotype is hit, yes?
Also, you can get a Coach handbag at the outlet mall for $90. It's probably not the wisest way to spend your money if you're barely scraping by, but let's not act like these are $1,000 purses.

This is what I was going to say. Coach is not that expensive.
I'm laughing at the person who saw someone buy groceries with food stamps and then charge $60 of wine on a debit card.
I used to work with the elderly and disabled- most of whom had a food stamp card. When I would run their errands (which was part of my job) I would seperate my purchases to pay for with my debit card and their purchases to pay for with their food stamp card. I was authorized to use their card as their caretaker. Pretty much every one of my co-workers had to do the same thing. This is not a rare thing.
I used to love seeing the nosy bitches in line behind me cringe and burn up inside.
