Our e-mail program at work used to include a really useful summary page where you could see when anyone in our network had opened/read/deleted an e-mail. I loved that shit because there's a lot of lazy students who constantly claim they didn't get the information but I could PROVE THAT THEY HAD READ IT.
We switched e-mail applications last November and we no longer have that awesome summary page. Just read receipts. And I hate read receipts with a passion so I don't use them. If people request one from me I decline it.
the PROPER way to school someone who hasn't read your emails is to attach or forward your original email when they write to you all indignant. i.e., you wait for THEM to fail FIRST.

I wish I could like this 12 times. In the dark ages when I was a newbie lawyer, when we were on Outlook version 1 or something and we didn't have the option to not send a read receipt, I had my email specially set to show me which ones had a read receipt so I could be sure NEVER to open them. I would only read them in the preview pane. See that? EFF YOU, LADY FROM ACCOUNTING! lol
I think my SIL request read reciepts on her emails, like even dumb ones to me about stupid shit. I always get antsy when she sends me one and I don't respond right away.
I only use the read receipt when I'm emailing an outside vendor or company I have never emailed before. If it was done to me within the office, I'd roll my eyes, but whatever. I think if something is truly important and urgent, a phone call or an in-person drop by is much more effective (if it's possible)
