It's not standard in my department. Not to mention that I've emailed with this woman countless times, about far more important matters, and she's never sent one before.
I always emphatically select the NO I DO NOT WANT TO SEND A READ RECEIPT. I only get them a few times a year and I instantly judge the persons character in return. Ha.

Hmmm.... Maybe it's just in my industry, where everything is very CYA-oriented. Everyone asks, everyone gets, and in my office, everyone's e-mail is set up to automatically mark the returned receipts as read and file them away in their own folder, so they don't clog up your inbox.
mine defaults to getting them, I don't know why only certain people actually get asked the question though. the majority of my personal emails I get the receipt for but only 2-3 are asked if they want to send me one. I always click no one I get the message asking me
I use read receipts when I email a new client to make sure I got the email right. A lot of clients never write me back, their crap gets filed and then 6 months later they are bitching to my boss asking why their crap wasn't done. Read receipt yo!
I'll put a read receipt on a work email if it is an important submission where I actually need to confirm receipt, or if the recipient has been a pain in the ass and not returning my emails (in which case I will probably also CC his or her supervisor if possible.) It tends to work pretty well.

I despise when people do that. It insinuates that they don't trust me to read my goddamn email. So yeah, I am passive-aggressive about it and just choose "NO, DO NOT SEND READ RECEIPT." And then I respond whenever I decide to respond.
Read receipt is not the default setting in my office, nor is it used regularly. when I get one of these, it's almost always from someone who's sat on a task too long before passing it on and is then demanding super-tight turnarounds. I hate when they do that.

oh, fuck no. i don't need someone trying to prove to him or herself that i'm doing what they want me to do. i'm not their damm marionnette! i'm a real girl, and i don't have to tell if or when i read your emails.
and whoever justified it with a "but what if my large attachment doesn't get through?" NO WAY. that's what the mailer daemon is for. besides, duh, the PROPER way to school someone who hasn't read your emails is to attach or forward your original email when they write to you all indignant. i.e., you wait for THEM to fail FIRST.
Did I mention that she asked me for a document I authored last week just for "her reference", then proceeds to email about five other people with CORRECTIONS to said document? Homegirl, you are nowhere within my chain of command or accountability. And your little edits weren't even accurate.
